Přehled

O stadionu

The Stade de la Beaujoire-Louis Fonteneau is a football stadium in Nantes, western France, opened in 1984 and designed by architect Berdje Agopyan. With a seating capacity of 35,322, it is the home of FC Nantes — known as Les Canaris (The Canaries) — one of French football's most decorated clubs. The stadium was purpose-built for UEFA Euro 1984 and later served as a venue for UEFA Euro 2016.

Location and surroundings

The ground stands in the Beaujoire district on the north-eastern edge of Nantes, approximately 6 km from the city centre. The surrounding area includes industrial estates, a shopping complex, and the Parc de la Beaujoire — a recreational green space with lakes directly adjacent to the stadium. Tram line 1 connects the stadium to central Nantes.

Main uses

The stadium is the home ground of FC Nantes for all Ligue 1 fixtures since 1984. It has also hosted French national team internationals and was one of twelve venues for UEFA Euro 2016, staging four group-stage matches. The stadium additionally serves as a venue for large-scale commercial and cultural events across the Pays de la Loire region.

Historie

Cesta časem

Stade de la Beaujoire was conceived as part of France's preparation to host UEFA Euro 1984, with Nantes selected as one of the tournament cities requiring a modern international-standard stadium.

Construction and opening

The stadium was designed by French architect Berdje Agopyan and constructed between 1982 and 1984. It opened in 1984 just ahead of Euro 1984, with an initial capacity of around 52,000 that included standing areas. Over subsequent decades capacity was progressively reduced to the current 35,322 all-seated configuration, in line with UEFA safety standards.

Major renovations

The most significant renovation took place ahead of UEFA Euro 2016, when the stadium was upgraded to UEFA Category 4 standard. Works included replacement of seating throughout the stands, improvements to player and media facilities, and a modernised security system. The renovation reduced the headline capacity but considerably improved comfort and compliance with modern European requirements.

Notable moments

The defining chapter in Beaujoire's history is the legendary 1994-95 season, when FC Nantes under coach Raynald Denoueix went through the entire Ligue 1 season unbeaten, delivering the beau jeu (beautiful game) philosophy that gave the stadium its wider symbolic identity. That title victory remains one of the most celebrated feats in French football history. At Euro 2016 the ground hosted four group-stage matches including England vs Russia (1-1) and Germany vs Poland (0-0).

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

Stade de la Beaujoire hosts a loyal and passionate support base built around FC Nantes's strong regional identity and the club's yellow-and-green colours that dominate the stands on matchdays.

Fan culture

The most vocal supporters congregate in the Virage Nord (north stand), where ultra groups including Brigade Loire and Wolves produce tifos, coordinated chants and flags for big occasions. The stadium chant Allez Nantes and the club's canary-yellow imagery create a vivid, family-friendly atmosphere that reflects Nantes's provincial football pride. The club's identity is closely tied to the attacking, artistic style of football associated with the 1990s golden generation — the so-called Belle Epoque of Les Canaris.

Big matches

The pinnacle of the club's history at Beaujoire was the unbeaten 1994-95 Ligue 1 season, which drew pan-French attention and cemented Nantes as a symbol of stylish football. The club won eight French league titles in total, with several celebrated at this ground. On the international stage, UEFA Euro 2016 brought fans from across Europe to Beaujoire, with full-capacity crowds for group-stage fixtures. The ground's name honours Louis Fonteneau, a long-serving president of FC Nantes, underscoring the deep connection between club and stadium.
