Stade Pierre-Mauroy

The history of Stade Pierre-Mauroy is relatively short but rich with milestone moments, born out of Lille Metropolis's ambition for a world-class multi-purpose venue.

Construction and opening

The project was approved in 2006 as part of the Metropolis of Lille's development strategy. French architect Pierre Ferret was commissioned to design the ground. Construction began in 2009, and the stadium was officially inaugurated on 17 September 2012 with a friendly match between Lille and AS Nancy. The original name was Grand Stade Lille Métropole; it was subsequently renamed in honour of Pierre Mauroy, the former mayor who championed the project. Total investment reached approximately 280 million euros.

Major renovations

As a modern facility, Stade Pierre-Mauroy has required no major structural overhaul. The most significant change has been in commercial naming: from 2023 the ground carries the title Decathlon Arena - Stade Pierre-Mauroy following a naming rights deal with the French sporting goods retailer Decathlon, which is headquartered in Villeneuve-d'Ascq. The stadium's retractable turf system -- a technical hallmark of the ground -- allows seamless conversion between outdoor football and enclosed arena formats.

Notable moments

The stadium made its international debut during UEFA Euro 2016, hosting group matches involving England, Romania, Albania and Wales. On the domestic front it witnessed LOSC Lille's historic Ligue 1 title triumph in 2020/21, when the club -- under manager Christophe Galtier -- ended PSG's dominance of French football. The ground has also hosted Davis Cup tennis and international rugby union fixtures.

The atmosphere at Stade Pierre-Mauroy is considered one of the most intense in French football. Its modern bowl design with steeply raked tiers and a retractable roof creates strong acoustics and keeps crowd noise focused on the pitch.

Fan culture

The Dogues de Lille and Red Tigers ultras groups form the beating heart of LOSC's supporter culture. Based in the northern stand, they produce loud coordinated chants and striking visual choreography. Lille fans are known for their commitment even during tight or difficult spells, sustaining call-and-response chanting that carries across the entire bowl. The Derby du Nord against RC Lens -- one of Ligue 1's fiercest regional derbies -- consistently produces the most febrile atmosphere of the season.

Big matches

The most celebrated chapter in the stadium's short history came with the Ligue 1 title in 2020/21, which ended a decade of PSG dominance and validated Lille's investment in their modern home. Among European nights, standout performances in the 2021/22 Champions League -- including victories over Sevilla and a famous 1-0 win against Chelsea -- elevated the venue's continental reputation. The ground also appeared on the global stage during Euro 2016, most notably when England drew 1-1 with Russia before a massive travelling support.

Visiting Stade Pierre-Mauroy is straightforward thanks to a dedicated metro connection from central Lille.

How to get there

• Metro: Line 1 (VAL automated metro) runs directly to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy stop; the journey from central Lille (Place de la République) takes approximately 20 minutes.
• Car: From motorway A1, exit at Lezennes or Villeneuve-d'Ascq; the onsite car park holds 7,000 spaces -- arrive at least 2 hours before kick-off.
• Train: From Lille-Europe or Lille-Flandres TGV stations, connect via metro for a total journey of around 25-30 minutes.
• Plane: Lille-Lesquin Airport is 10 km away; taxi or bus connection to the stadium.

Tickets and tours

Match tickets for LOSC Lille are sold through the official club website and platforms such as Ticketmaster France. For high-profile fixtures -- especially European games and the Derby du Nord -- booking well in advance is strongly recommended. The stadium offers public guided tours including changing rooms, the mixed zone and VIP lounges, usually on non-matchdays; group bookings must be arranged through the venue website.

• When to arrive? Aim to be there at least 60 minutes before kick-off -- metro trains fill up quickly in the final hour.
