Přehled
O stadionu
Parc Olympique Lyonnais, commercially known as Groupama Stadium, is a modern all-seater football stadium with a capacity of 59,186 located in Décines-Charpieu, a suburb in the Metropolis of Lyon. Opened in 2016, it is the third largest stadium in France and the permanent home of Olympique Lyonnais.
Location and surroundings
The stadium stands in Décines-Charpieu, an eastern suburb of Lyon, roughly 10 km from the city centre. The out-of-town location allowed the club to build a fully self-contained campus including two hotels, an entertainment centre and commercial offices alongside the stadium bowl itself. Lyon is France's third-largest city, and the metropolitan area's population of over 1.4 million provides a wide catchment for the venue.
The immediate surroundings offer pre-match dining and retail, while proximity to the A43 motorway makes the stadium accessible by car from multiple directions. An extended public transport network links Décines to central Lyon and the wider metropolitan area.
Main uses
The stadium serves primarily as the home ground of Olympique Lyonnais in Ligue 1 and European competition. Its design as a multi-purpose campus with hotel and conference facilities also makes it a destination for corporate events and large-scale entertainment. The venue hosted matches at UEFA EURO 2016 immediately after opening and regularly stages France national team fixtures and women's football matches.
Historie
Cesta časem
The origins of Parc Olympique Lyonnais lie in the long-held ambition of Olympique Lyonnais president Jean-Michel Aulas to give the club a stadium it fully owned. After decades of renting the Stade de Gerland, Aulas pursued a privately financed project designed to free the club from dependence on municipal infrastructure and generate new commercial revenue streams.
Construction and opening
The architectural commission went to Populous, the firm behind many of Europe's leading sports venues. Their design centred on a tight, closed bowl with excellent sightlines from every tier. Construction ran from 2012 to 2016, with total costs reaching approximately 405 million euros, making it one of the most expensive sports venues ever built in France.
The stadium was inaugurated on 9 January 2016 with a Ligue 1 fixture against Troyes AC. Within months it hosted several matches at UEFA EURO 2016, confirming its world-class credentials in its inaugural year.
Major renovations
Designed as a state-of-the-art facility from the outset, the stadium has not required significant structural modifications since opening. The commercial naming rights deal with insurer Groupama introduced the parallel name Groupama Stadium, which is widely used alongside the official title.
Notable moments
The stadium's most high-profile early moments came during UEFA EURO 2016, when it hosted quarter-final and group-stage matches watched by international audiences. It has also staged the UEFA Women's Champions League Final and repeatedly hosted Ligue 1 title-deciding matches, as well as European nights featuring Olympique Lyonnais in the knockout rounds of the Champions League.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
The atmosphere inside Parc Olympique Lyonnais - or Groupama Stadium - reflects both modern design principles and the passionate culture of one of France's most decorated clubs. The closed, geometric bowl concentrates crowd noise effectively, creating an intense acoustic environment that rewards a full house.
Fan culture
Olympique Lyonnais carries the weight of an extraordinary run of seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles between 1999 and 2008 - a period that embedded high expectations among the club's supporters. That winning culture has produced a fanbase that demands quality and responds loudly when the team delivers.
The most vocal sections are occupied by organised supporter groups in the Virage Nord and Virage Sud - the two main end stands. These ultras groups coordinate chants, choreographies and tifo displays that give European matchnights a distinctive visual character. Olympique Lyonnais also shares the stadium with Olympique Lyonnais Féminin, one of the most successful women's clubs in the world, attracting a dedicated and growing separate fanbase to the same arena.
Big matches
Among the most memorable occasions are the UEFA EURO 2016 fixtures, when international audiences experienced the stadium at full capacity for the first time. Champions League knockout nights, when Olympique Lyonnais have regularly reached the later rounds in recent decades, generate some of the loudest atmospheres. The derby fixture against AS Saint-Étienne - known as the Derby Rhône-Alpes - is consistently one of the most charged matches of the French calendar.
