Přehled

O stadionu

Stade Bollaert-Delelis is a football stadium in Lens, northern France, in the Pas-de-Calais department. Its capacity of 38,223 seats notably exceeds the entire population of the host city -- one of the most striking statistical quirks in European football. Built in 1933, it has served as the home of RC Lens -- the Sang et Or (Blood and Gold) -- ever since.

Location and surroundings

The stadium sits in the heart of Lens, an industrial city embedded in the historic northern French coalfield. The immediate surroundings -- terraced brick houses, colliery spoil tips on the horizon, and tightly packed streets -- frame the ground in a working-class atmosphere unique in French football. The densely populated neighbouring communes of Lievin, Henin-Beaumont and Bethune supply thousands of supporters who travel to fill the terraces on matchdays.

Main uses

The stadium serves primarily as the home ground of RC Lens for Ligue 1 and domestic cup fixtures. In 2016 it hosted group-stage matches during UEFA EURO 2016, confirming its status as a venue of international standard. Outside the football season, the stadium welcomes corporate events and guided tours for the public.

Historie

Cesta časem

The story of Stade Bollaert-Delelis is inseparable from the mining heritage of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais coalfield and from the survival of a club that outlasted the industry that built it.

Construction and opening

The stadium was built between 1931 and 1933 at the initiative of Felix Bollaert, a director of the Compagnie des Mines de Lens who was a committed patron of local sport. Bollaert died shortly before the inauguration and the stadium was named in his honour. In 2012 the name was extended to include Andre Delelis -- former mayor of Lens and Minister of Commerce under President Francois Mitterrand -- who had fought to rescue both the club and the stadium following the end of coal mining in the region.

Key renovations

When the coal industry collapsed in the 1980s and 1990s, the club and its stadium faced an existential crisis. Andre Delelis secured public-sector backing that funded successive modernisation rounds. The ground was progressively upgraded with full roof coverage over all four stands and improved sightlines, reaching its current configuration with a compact, enclosed bowl that amplifies crowd noise to exceptional levels.

Notable moments

In 1998 the stadium hosted group-stage matches at the FIFA World Cup, including the fixture between Colombia and Tunisia. At UEFA EURO 2016 it staged three group matches. RC Lens used Bollaert-Delelis as the stage for their celebrated Ligue 2 title and promoted return to the top flight in the 2019-20 season.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

Stade Bollaert-Delelis is widely acknowledged as producing one of the loudest and most intense atmospheres in French football, drawing frequent comparisons to English grounds because of the stands' proximity to the pitch and the uninterrupted singing of the terraces.

Fan culture

Sang et Or -- Blood and Gold -- is more than a kit colour; it is the collective identity of an entire region. The fan culture in Lens is rooted in mining solidarity: the same community values of mutual support and collective voice that defined pit life have translated into an overwhelmingly vocal matchday culture. Before every home fixture, La Marseillaise is sung by the entire crowd without interruption -- a moment that consistently moves visiting supporters regardless of nationality. Because stadium capacity exceeds the city's population of around 31,000, the stands are de facto filled by supporters drawn from the whole surrounding metropolitan area.

Big matches

The most celebrated atmospheric nights at Bollaert-Delelis have come in European competition. The 2001-02 UEFA Cup match against AC Milan is often cited as one of the most intense atmospheres ever generated at a French ground. During UEFA EURO 2016 the stadium demonstrated to a pan-European audience both its physical quality and its ability to generate exceptional crowd energy, with supporters of multiple nations creating a memorable tournament environment.
