Overview

About the stadium

The Estadio Nuevo Francisco Urbano is the home of Club Deportivo Morón, affectionately known as "el Gallo" (the Rooster), and rises in the city of Morón, in the western part of Greater Buenos Aires. Opened in 2013, it is one of the most modern grounds in Argentine lower-division football and a symbol of the institutional revival of a club founded in 1947.

A colossus of the west

With a capacity of 32,000 spectators, the venue was built on the former site of the Castelar textile factory, along Avenida Hipólito Yrigoyen 1600. The pitch measures the regulation 105 × 68 metres of natural grass.

  • Club: Deportivo Morón ("el Gallo")
  • Capacity: 32,000 spectators
  • Opened: 26 July 2013
  • Location: Morón, western Greater Buenos Aires

The complex is far more than a pitch: it includes 38 VIP boxes, an indoor arena for 3,450 people, a hotel, an Olympic swimming pool and auxiliary fields, making it a genuine sports city. The name honours Francisco Urbano, a historic president elected in 1956.

History

Journey through time

The history of the Nuevo Francisco Urbano is tied to Deportivo Morón's determination to build a stadium worthy of its tradition. The previous ground, also named Francisco Urbano, had been inaugurated in 1956 and remodelled between 1960 and 1961, but had grown too small and dated for the club's ambitions.

From textile factory to stadium

The new arena was raised on the grounds of the Castelar textile factory, which operated from 1941 to 1994. The Vila Sebastián studio designed the project, and Grupo Bautec carried out construction between 2012 and 2013, with an estimated investment of 600 million pesos.

  • Previous stadium: opened in 1956
  • Construction: 2012–2013
  • Inauguration: 26 July 2013
  • Opening match: Morón 2 – 1 Argentina U-20

The official debut drew some 30,000 fans who watched the "Gallo" defeat the youth national team. The name pays tribute to Francisco Urbano, a president elected in 1956 and regarded as one of the most important figures in the club's history.

Atmosphere

Matchday

When Deportivo Morón play at home, the Nuevo Francisco Urbano turns into a cauldron of western Buenos Aires football. The fans of the "Gallo" are renowned for their unconditional fervour, their banners and a roar that never lets up across the ninety minutes, beating to the rhythm of Morón's neighbourhoods.

El telón del Gallo

The stands, close to the pitch, pile intense pressure on visiting sides. On derby days or promotion deciders, the stadium is bathed in red and the build-up spills onto the streets around Avenida Hipólito Yrigoyen.

  • Nickname: "el Gallo" (the Rooster)
  • Club colour: red
  • Atmosphere: working-class, loud and familial

The chants of the crowd, the snare drums and the bombos create the unmistakable atmosphere of Argentine lower-division football, where neighbourhood belonging and passion for the colours matter as much as the result. Attending a "Gallo" match means diving into one of the most authentic experiences in Argentine football.

Practical info

Visiting the stadium

Reaching the Estadio Nuevo Francisco Urbano is straightforward thanks to Morón's position at the heart of western Greater Buenos Aires, one of the best-connected areas of the metropolitan region. The stadium sits on Avenida Hipólito Yrigoyen 1600, just minutes from the city centre.

Getting there

  • Train: the Sarmiento Line connects Once station with Morón in about 30–40 minutes
  • Buses: numerous lines link the stadium with the city of Buenos Aires and neighbouring districts
  • Car: access via the Acceso Oeste motorway and Avenida Gaona
  • Match day: arrive early, as the surroundings fill with supporters

Nearby you will find parrillas, bars and typical neighbourhood shops to grab a bite before kick-off. It is worth checking the current rules on away supporters, as their attendance is often restricted in Argentine football. Morón also offers plenty of dining and transport options to combine your stadium visit with a tour of the western suburbs.
