O stadionu

Estadio Más Monumental (officially named Estadio Antonio Vespucio Liberti, nicknamed El Monumental) is a football stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina, located in the Belgrano neighborhood by the banks of the Río de la Plata. With a capacity of 84,567 spectators, it is the largest stadium in Argentina and all of South America, and one of the most significant football sanctuaries in the Western Hemisphere.

Home of River Plate and the National Team

The stadium serves as the home ground for Club Atlético River Plate, one of the two most successful Argentine clubs and eternal rivals of Boca Juniors. It also hosts the home matches of the Argentinian national football team during World Cup qualifiers and friendly matches. The women's team of River Plate and the Argentine rugby team also regularly play here.

Global Significance

Más Monumental is etched in history as the venue for the 1978 World Cup final, where Argentina defeated the Netherlands 3-1 to secure their first world title. It also regularly hosts the finals of the Copa Libertadores and Copa América—most recently in 2011. It is one of the few South American stadiums that combines immense capacity, international prestige, and a vibrant club identity.

The commercial name Más Monumental was acquired in 2022 when the supermarket chain ChangoMás bought the naming rights. For most fans and commentators, however, it remains simply El Monumental—a monument to River Plate and Argentine football.

Foundation and Initial Construction (1934–1938)

River Plate, founded in 1901, purchased the land for the new stadium on October 31, 1934 in the Belgrano neighborhood. It was built on reclaimed marshland along the Río de la Plata. The cornerstone was laid on May 25, 1935, at the corner of Figueroa Alcorta and Udaondo streets. After obtaining a state loan of 2.5 million pesos, architects José Aslan and Héctor Ezcurra began construction on September 27, 1936.

Due to a lack of funds, the project was shortened—what was originally planned as four two-tiered stands became a horseshoe-shaped structure. The stadium was officially opened on May 26, 1938, with approximately 70,000 spectators in attendance. It was named after the club's long-time president Antonio Vespucio Liberti (1900–1978).

Completion and Golden Era (1958–1978)

The open end of the horseshoe was closed off by the club only in 1958, under the presidency of Enrique Pardo. The new Colonia stand was financed by the transfer of player Omar Sívori to Juventus. At that time, the capacity surpassed 90,000 seats for the first time.

Before the 1978 World Cup that Argentina hosted, Monumental was completely renovated according to the original project specifications. The stadium hosted the opening match of the tournament (West Germany vs. Poland) and a total of eight matches, including the famous final between Argentina and the Netherlands, which the home team won 3-1.

Major Renovation (2020–2023)

Between 2020 and 2023, the stadium underwent significant modernization: the athletics track that previously separated the fans from the pitch was removed, the front rows were moved closer to the field, and the original wooden benches were replaced with plastic seats. The stadium partially reopened in February 2023, and the current capacity is 84,567 spectators—the largest in South America.

In 2022, the commercial naming rights were acquired by ChangoMás, officially naming the stadium Estadio Más Monumental. In January 2026, another expansion was announced: the capacity is set to increase to 101,000 seats with the addition of covered stands. The work is expected to take approximately 36 months and cost around 100 million dollars.

Superclásico — The Most Intense Derby in the World

Más Monumental is the venue for matches known worldwide as the Superclásico—the derby between River Plate and Boca Juniors. The British newspaper The Observer labeled it the most passionate football experience on the planet. The atmosphere includes continuous chanting, massive bandeiras (flags) across the stands, paper pyrotechnics, and the supporter group Los Borrachos del Tablón ("Drunks from the Stand"), which accompanies the matches with music and choreographies for the full 90 minutes without interruption.

Famous Moments

  • 1978 — World Cup final Argentina–Netherlands 3-1 after extra time, featuring the goal by Mario Kempes and Argentina's first world title.
  • 1986 and 1996Copa Libertadores finals against América de Cali, both with an official attendance of over 86,000 spectators.
  • 1987 — Copa América semifinal Argentina–Uruguay with an estimated attendance of over 87,000 people.
  • 1993 — 1994 World Cup qualifier: the worst home defeat for the Argentine national team in history (0-5 against Colombia).
  • 2011 — The last Copa América final held at Monumental.

Home for Argentina's National Team

The stadium remains the traditional home of the Argentine national team. The Albiceleste have not lost a World Cup qualifying match here since their defeat to Colombia in 1993—this streak was ended only by Ecuador in October 2015.

Concert Sanctuary of Latin America

In addition to football, Monumental is the largest concert arena in Argentina. Madonna holds the record for the fastest ticket sales (263,000 tickets in three hours in 2008). Coldplay performed ten sold-out concerts in 2022 as part of the Music of the Spheres Tour for a total of 626,841 spectators—a record in the history of Latin American concerts. Taylor Swift inaugurated her first Argentine tour here in November 2023 as part of the Eras Tour. AC/DC recorded their famous concert DVD Live at River Plate here in 2009, along with performances from The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, U2, Roger Waters, and many others.
