Overview

About the stadium

The Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona (formerly Estadio Ciudad de La Plata) is a multi-purpose stadium in La Plata, Argentina, opened on 7 June 2003 with a capacity of 53,000 spectators. Popularly known as the Estadio Único (One-of-a-kind Stadium), it hosts football and a range of other sporting and cultural events.

Location and surroundings

The stadium stands in La Plata, the capital of Buenos Aires Province, located between 32nd and 526th avenues and 25th and 21st streets. The grounds also contain a small rugby union stadium and a centre for Physical Education, which tend to host intercollegiate events with local schools in the area. The complex thus combines top-level sport with youth and educational activities.

Main uses

As a multi-purpose stadium it is used primarily for football, with Estudiantes LP and Gimnasia y Esgrima LP among its tenants. Estudiantes moved here after their own Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi was declared unsafe in 2005; Gimnasia returned to their original Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo in mid-2008. The venue also accommodates rugby fixtures and large-scale concerts.

History

Journey through time

The history of the Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona is closely tied to the ambition of Buenos Aires Province to build a modern multi-purpose arena matching the highest international standards. The stadium was first built under the name Estadio Ciudad de La Plata and was conceived from the outset as a venue of regional significance.

Construction and opening

The stadium was opened on 7 June 2003 and at the time was considered "the most modern of Latin America", even without having completed all of the planned construction. Its striking architecture and distinctive roof structure quickly became a symbol of modern sporting infrastructure in Argentina.

Major renovations

The stadium's administration evolved over the years: for a long period it was managed jointly by the provincial government, the Municipality of La Plata, and the local clubs Estudiantes and Gimnasia. Since December 2025 the stadium has been owned by Buenos Aires Province and administered by the Argentine Football Association (AFA).

Notable moments

Key moments include the arrival of Estudiantes LP in 2005, after their Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi was declared unsafe under security regulations. Most symbolic of all is the renaming of the stadium in honour of Diego Armando Maradona, one of the greatest legends of Argentine and world football, whose name the venue now carries.

Atmosphere

Matchday

The atmosphere at the Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona is shaped by the passionate football culture of La Plata, home to one of Argentina's fiercest rivalries between Estudiantes LP and Gimnasia y Esgrima LP. With a capacity of 53,000 spectators, the modern arena can generate an overwhelming backdrop for its biggest matches.

Fan culture

Argentine football is among the most emotional in the world, and the supporters of La Plata's clubs are no exception. The stands come alive with chants, drums and large-scale choreographed displays typical of South American football. Fans of both Estudiantes and Gimnasia treat every match here as a question of honour and club identity, making a visit a genuinely memorable experience.

Big matches

Beyond league fixtures, the stadium has hosted international and national-team matches as well as major concerts by world stars, for which its multi-purpose layout and modern facilities are well suited. As one of Argentina's largest stadiums, it is a sought-after stage for events that go far beyond the regular league calendar, and its dedication to Diego Maradona lends it an exceptional symbolic resonance.
