Overview
About the stadium
The Estadio Juan Domingo Perón is a football stadium in the Alta Córdoba neighbourhood of Córdoba, Argentina, and the historic home of Instituto Atlético Central Córdoba, the club affectionately known as "La Gloria". Built into the dense grid of one of the city's oldest barrios, it holds roughly 26,000 spectators and is widely nicknamed the "Monumental de Alta Córdoba" for its imposing scale within such a compact urban setting.
A neighbourhood landmark
The ground is the third-largest stadium in Córdoba province, behind the Mario Alberto Kempes and the Julio César Villagra. Its natural-grass pitch measures the standard 105 × 68 metres, ringed by terraces that rise steeply close to the touchlines.
- Club: Instituto Atlético Central Córdoba ("La Gloria")
- Capacity: around 26,000
- Location: Alta Córdoba, Córdoba city
- Inaugurated: 15 August 1951
For generations of red-and-white supporters, the stadium is inseparable from the identity of both club and barrio, a place where Instituto's long pursuit of top-flight football has played out match after match.
History
Journey through time
The stadium's origins lie in a wave of mid-twentieth-century state support for Argentine football. In 1946 the national Congress passed Law No. 12,931, earmarking funds to subsidise stadium construction, and Instituto secured a loan of 1.5 million pesos under that legislation. The ground was inaugurated on 15 August 1951, coinciding with the club's 33rd-anniversary celebrations.
Naming and opening
The arena was named after Juan Domingo Perón, the soldier and statesman who served three terms as President of Argentina and whose government underwrote the building programme that made the stadium possible. Fittingly, the opening was marked by a friendly against Racing Club de Avellaneda.
- Funding: national subsidy under Law No. 12,931
- Opened: 15 August 1951
- First match: friendly vs Racing Club
Since then the ground has remained Instituto's home through decades of promotions and relegations, mirroring the club's persistent ambition to establish itself among Argentina's elite. The terraces have witnessed the full arc of "La Gloria's" footballing fortunes.
Atmosphere
Matchday
On matchday the Estadio Juan Domingo Perón becomes a wall of red and white, the colours of Instituto worn with fierce pride across the steep terraces of Alta Córdoba. The closeness of the stands to the pitch concentrates the noise, and the chants of "La Gloria" roll down over visiting teams from the first whistle.
Córdoba football passion
Córdoba is one of Argentina's great footballing cities, and Instituto's support is among its most loyal. The keenest rivalries are local: clashes with Belgrano and Talleres carry the weight of the city's identity, turning ordinary fixtures into charged occasions.
- Colours: red and white
- Nickname: "La Gloria"
- Main rivals: Belgrano, Talleres
- Atmosphere: tight terraces, relentless chanting
Beyond the derbies, the barrio itself sets the tone, with bars and street corners filling before kickoff. To watch a game here is to feel the bond between a working-class neighbourhood and a club that has carried its name for more than a century.
