Overview

About the stadium

The Estadio Gigante de Arroyito, officially the Estadio Dr. Lisandro de la Torre, is the home ground of Club Atlético Rosario Central in the city of Rosario, in Argentina's Santa Fe province. It sits in the Arroyito neighbourhood on the banks of the Paraná River, and its nickname — "the giant of Arroyito" — captures both its scale and its standing in the city.

With a capacity of roughly 46,955 spectators, it ranks among the largest football grounds in Argentina's interior. Steep stands wrap tightly around the pitch, creating the enclosed, roaring atmosphere typical of South American football.

A symbol of Rosario

The Gigante de Arroyito is far more than a sports venue — it is a genuine institution. For Rosario Central's supporters, known as the "canallas", it is hallowed ground where the club's most important moments unfold. Its significance reaches well beyond the neighbourhood, making it one of the enduring symbols of the entire city of Rosario.

History

Journey through time

The stadium was officially inaugurated on 14 November 1926 with a match against city rivals Newell's Old Boys in the Copa Nicasio Vila. It has been Rosario Central's home without interruption ever since.

Its largest transformation came between 1974 and 1978, when it was prepared to host the 1978 FIFA World Cup staged in Argentina. The capacity rose to more than 41,000 at that time.

The 1978 World Cup

The Gigante de Arroyito hosted six matches of the tournament. In the first round, Tunisia, Mexico and Poland met here. In the second round, hosts Argentina played three crucial games — beating Poland 2–0, thrashing Peru 6–0, and drawing 0–0 with Brazil. Those results helped propel Argentina toward its first world title. In 2023–2024 the stadium underwent further modernisation, including lowering the playing surface and installing a new lighting system.

Atmosphere

Matchday

The atmosphere at the Gigante de Arroyito is among the most intense in Argentina. Rosario Central's fans, nicknamed the "canallas", fill the steep stands with blue and gold, backing the team with relentless singing and drumming.

The highlight of every season is the Clásico Rosarino — the city derby against Newell's Old Boys. It is one of the most passionate and fiercely contested rivalries in world football, splitting the entire city into two camps.

A stadium by the river

The ground's setting beside the Paraná River gives it a singular charm. From the upper rows the wide river is visible, forming a scenic backdrop to the seething cauldron of football below. The mix of water, roaring terraces and South American passion makes a matchday here an unforgettable experience.
