Overview

About the stadium

The Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades is one of Argentina's newest and most modern football stadiums and the pride of Santiago del Estero province. Opened in 2021, its cylindrical, fully roofed structure and sleek white façade quickly made it one of the country's most striking arenas.

A modern arena in northern Argentina

The stadium holds 30,000 spectators and can be expanded to around 42,000 seats when needed. Designed under architect Enrique Lombardi (Luciani Asociados), it prioritises excellent sightlines from every seat and a compact, intimate football atmosphere.

Its standout features include:

  • fully covered grandstands that shield fans from sun and rain
  • VIP areas, a restaurant and a sports museum
  • modern media facilities and parking for hundreds of vehicles
  • a striking five-metre bronze statue of Diego Maradona at the main entrance

Thanks to its top-class facilities, the arena rapidly became a favourite venue for major matches, cup finals and international tournaments, far from the traditional hubs of Buenos Aires.

History

Journey through time

The idea of building a world-class stadium in Santiago del Estero took concrete shape in 2018, when construction began. The province wanted infrastructure that would place it firmly on the map of Argentine and South American football.

From opening to a temple of finals

The stadium was inaugurated on 4 March 2021 with the Supercopa Argentina between River Plate and Racing Club. As early as 3 June 2021 it staged its first international, when Argentina's national team hosted Chile in a World Cup qualifier.

Other milestones include:

  • 2022 World Cup qualifiers featuring the Argentina national team
  • the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup, both group and knockout stages
  • the 2023 Copa de la Liga final, where Rosario Central beat Platense 1–0
  • repeated Copa Argentina finals and domestic cup ties

With its neutral location and modern standards, the arena earned the nickname "the stadium of finals" and became one of the country's most sought-after neutral venues.

Atmosphere

Matchday

The atmosphere at Madre de Ciudades blends the warmth of northern Argentine crowds with the comfort of a modern arena. Steep stands and a low roof trap the noise inside, so even a partially full house can sound thunderous.

The passion of northern Argentina

For national-team games and finals, the stands fill with fans from across the province and the whole country. Santiago del Estero is one of Argentina's most football-mad regions, and the local crowd is known for being loud and warm-hearted.

What makes the experience special:

  • a sea of light-blue-and-white shirts at Albiceleste matches
  • superb acoustics thanks to the fully covered grandstands
  • closeness to the pitch and excellent views from every seat
  • an emotional welcome at the Maradona statue outside the ground

Club games for local sides Central Córdoba and Mitre add everyday but genuine cup passion, while the big finals turn the entire city into one large celebration of football.

Practical info

Visiting the stadium

The Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades sits to the north of the city of Santiago del Estero, near the banks of the Río Dulce and along Avenida Belgrano. The provincial capital lies in north-western Argentina, roughly 1,000 km from Buenos Aires.

Getting to the stadium

You can reach Santiago del Estero by air via Vicecomodoro Ángel de la Paz Aragonés Airport, by long-distance bus or by train. The stadium itself is easy to reach from the city centre.

Practical tips:

  • by car or taxi from the centre in a few minutes, with parking for hundreds of vehicles
  • city buses serve the area on big match days
  • for finals and national-team games, buy tickets in advance — they often sell out
  • a riverside recreational zone surrounds the arena, ideal for a pre-match stroll

We recommend arriving early, taking a photo by the Maradona statue and soaking up the atmosphere of one of Argentina's most modern arenas.
