Overview
About the stadium
The Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi, popularly known as Estadio UNO, is the home of Estudiantes de La Plata, one of the most decorated clubs in Argentine football. Set within the Paseo del Bosque park in La Plata, capital of Buenos Aires Province, the ground was completely rebuilt on the historic site where the club has played since the early twentieth century. Following its reopening in 2019, it gave the "Pincharratas" faithful the chance to watch their team on home soil again after years of footballing exile.
An identity reclaimed
The stadium holds roughly 32,530 spectators and is defined by its compact design, with stands close to the pitch that pile constant pressure on visiting sides.
- Club: Estudiantes de La Plata, nicknamed "el Pincha".
- Location: Paseo del Bosque, La Plata.
- Reopening: 9 November 2019.
- Colours: red and white vertical stripes.
More than a pitch, the Hirschi marks the club's return to its roots, a powerful symbol of belonging for a fanbase that waited more than a decade.
History
Journey through time
The stadium's story dates back to 1907, when Estudiantes inaugurated its ground on a plot in the Paseo del Bosque where a velodrome had once stood. For decades those wooden terraces witnessed the club's glory, until in September 2005 the venue had to close under safety rules banning wooden structures. The club was left without a home and wandered between borrowed stadiums.
Demolition and rebirth
Reconstruction stretched from 2008 to 2019, a long and emotional process that culminated in the reopening on 9 November 2019. The first official match came on 30 November 2019, a 1–1 draw with Atlético Tucumán.
- Original inauguration: 25 December 1907.
- Closure: September 2005.
- Rebuild: 2008–2019.
- Name: honouring Jorge Luis Hirschi, a historic club director.
The new stadium rose on the same hallowed plot, honouring more than a century of "Pincharrata" passion.
Atmosphere
Matchday
The atmosphere at the Hirschi is intense and deeply traditional, true to the spirit of a club that built its greatness on grit and character rather than budget. Estudiantes is one of the continent's giants: it won the Copa Libertadores in 1968, 1969, 1970 and 2009, plus the 1968 Intercontinental Cup against Manchester United. That glorious history pulses through every stand.
The La Plata derby
No fixture sets the terraces alight like the derby against Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, whose stadium lies less than a kilometre away. It is one of Argentina's fiercest rivalries.
- Nickname: "Pincharratas" or "el Pincha".
- Eternal rival: Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata ("el Lobo").
- Historic feat: three-time Libertadores winner (1968–1970).
- Latest continental crown: Copa Libertadores 2009.
With the stands so close to the pitch, the chants are amplified, turning every night into a vibrant spectacle.
