Přehled

O stadionu

Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas, also known as Estadio de Vallecas or informally as La Franja, is the home ground of Rayo Vallecano from the Madrid district of Puente de Vallecas. With a capacity of 14,708 seats, it is one of the smallest venues in Primera División, yet its reputation far exceeds its dimensions. The stadium was inaugurated on 10 May 1976 and is operated by the Comunidad de Madrid.

Location and surroundings

The ground sits in the heart of the Puente de Vallecas district in southeastern Madrid, approximately 8 kilometres from the city centre. Vallecas is a historically working-class neighbourhood with a strong community identity — very different from the tourist centres of the Spanish capital. Residential streets and apartment buildings press up against three sides of the ground, creating the intimate, raw atmosphere of an urban neighbourhood stadium.

Main uses

The stadium serves exclusively as the home of Rayo Vallecano in Primera División and the lower divisions during the club's spells outside the top flight. The combination of small capacity and a deeply local fanbase means matches are regularly sold out. Vallecas does not host international or representative fixtures — its purpose is entirely local and community-driven.

Historie

Cesta časem

The history of the stadium in Vallecas dates to the early 1970s, when Rayo Vallecano needed a proper venue for competitive football in the Spanish second division. Construction ran from 1972 to 1976, and the ground was officially opened on 10 May 1976.

Construction and the unbuilt stand

The original plan called for four stands that would enclose the stadium into a standard rectangle. For financial reasons, the fourth stand on the southern side was never built. In its place stands only a low concrete wall and advertising hoardings, leaving the ground permanently open on one end — an instantly recognisable silhouette that has become part of the club's identity. Rayo supporters have embraced this architectural incompleteness as a badge of honour rather than a shortcoming.

Capacity and renovations

Over the decades the stadium has seen gradual upgrades to facilities and seating, while capacity has remained stable at 14,708. The venue is operated by the Comunidad de Madrid, not by the club itself. It has retained its compact, unvarnished character, which sets it apart from the modern multipurpose arenas that now dominate European football.

Notable historical moments

Rayo Vallecano has played in Primera División intermittently since the 1980s, and the Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas has witnessed dramatic promotions and painful relegations alike. One of the most celebrated moments came in the 2000/01 season, when Rayo defeated Barcelona 3-0 at Vallecas, stunning the football world. The stadium has also staged Copa del Rey ties and memorable clashes against Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

The atmosphere at Vallecas is among the most raw and authentic in Spanish football. Small capacity, stands close to the pitch, and a fanbase rooted in the local community combine to create something that large modern arenas simply cannot replicate.

Left-wing fan culture

Rayo Vallecano is renowned for its overtly left-wing and anti-fascist fan culture — one of the most politically engaged in European football. The main ultra group, Bukaneros, regularly hangs anti-fascist banners and solidarity messages for marginalised communities. The club and its supporters respond repeatedly to social issues: in 2014, fans at Vallecas protested the eviction of local resident Francisca Lanza, and the club subsequently awarded her a lifetime season ticket. This level of community solidarity is rare in world football.

Intimacy and proximity

The Preferencia stand and the side terraces are separated from the playing surface by just a few metres. Spectators can hear every instruction from the bench and every exchange between players on the pitch. On matchdays, the narrow streets around the stadium fill with supporters hours before kick-off — local bars and cafes form the heart of the pre-match ritual. A sold-out Vallecas sounds unlike any other stadium in Spain.
