Turf Moor is one of the oldest continuously occupied football grounds in England. Its 140-plus years of history mirror the fortunes of one of the country's most storied founding clubs.

Construction and opening

Burnley FC moved to Turf Moor in 1883, relocating from Calder Vale where the club had started. Five years later, in 1888, Burnley became one of the twelve founding members of the Football League — the world's first professional league competition. Turf Moor was therefore present at the very creation of organised league football. The ground's original layout consisted of simple wooden stands and open terracing; the current concrete and steel structure is the product of more than a century of incremental development.
