O stadionu
Wembley Stadium is the national football stadium of England, located in the Wembley area of the London Borough of Brent. The current stadium, opened in 2007, replaced the original legendary ground from 1923. With a capacity of 90,000 seats, it is the largest stadium in the United Kingdom and the second largest in Europe. It was designed by Populous (formerly HOK Sport).
Location and surroundings
The stadium sits in north-west London, dominated by its iconic steel arch — 133 metres tall and visible across much of the capital. The surrounding area, including Olympic Way (Wembley Way), has developed into a commercial zone with shops, restaurants, hotels, and the London Designer Outlet.
Main uses
Wembley is the home of the England men's national football team and hosts FA Cup Finals, EFL Cup Finals, and EFL play-off finals. The stadium is also one of Europe's most sought-after concert venues. In 2021, it hosted the semi-finals and final of UEFA Euro 2020.
Historie
Cesta časem
The original Wembley Stadium, opened in 1923, was one of the most celebrated sports venues in the world, famous for its twin towers. It was closed in 2000 and demolished to make way for the new build.
Construction and opening
Designed by Populous, construction of the new stadium began in 2002 but was dogged by significant delays and cost overruns. The stadium opened in 2007. Its defining feature is a 315-metre diameter steel arch that supports the retractable roof — a structure that replaced the twin towers as the new symbol of the ground.
Major renovations
The 2007 stadium was purpose-built with a partially retractable roof and world-class facilities. Technical upgrades since opening have included improvements to the sound system and LED lighting. The 90,000 all-seated capacity remains the highest in the UK.
Notable moments
The old Wembley hosted the 1966 FIFA World Cup Final — England 4:2 West Germany — the only major international trophy England has ever won. The new stadium's defining moment came at UEFA Euro 2020 (played in 2021), when Italy beat England on penalties in the final, played in front of a near-capacity home crowd.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
Wembley occupies a singular place in English football culture — a ground that carries the weight of history at every major occasion, from cup finals to international nights.
Fan culture
The pre-match tradition of singing Abide with Me before FA Cup Finals has been observed since the 1920s and remains one of the most emotionally distinctive rituals in English football. England international matches draw supporters from every county, with God Save the King sung by 90,000 voices creating a powerful opening to any fixture. The long approach along Wembley Way (Olympic Way) — lined with supporters, food stalls, and street sellers — is itself a key part of the matchday experience and builds atmosphere well before kick-off.
Big matches
UEFA Euro 2020 (2021) was the new stadium's most significant tournament occasion: England reached the final on home soil for the first time in a major tournament since 1966, only to lose to Italy on penalties in front of a devastated home crowd. FA Cup Finals held here annually draw tens of thousands of supporters from clubs across England. International fixtures — particularly against Germany, Argentina, or other historic opponents — generate an intensity that reflects Wembley's status as the symbolic home of English football.
