Přehled
O stadionu
Stamford Bridge is a football stadium in south-west London, straddling the boundary between the districts of Fulham and Chelsea in postal area SW6. With a capacity of approximately 40,343 seats, it is the home of Chelsea FC and one of England's most prestigious club grounds. The wider complex includes the official club shop, two four-star hotels and several restaurants.
Location and surroundings
The stadium stands on Fulham Road, directly adjacent to Fulham Broadway underground station (District line). The surrounding neighbourhood is a quiet residential area lined with cafes and restaurants that fill with supporters on matchdays. The famous King's Road is within easy walking distance, as are the galleries and boutiques of Chelsea. The ground is compact by modern standards, sitting tightly within an urban block.
Main uses
Stamford Bridge serves primarily as the home ground of Chelsea FC for Premier League fixtures, domestic cup ties and European competition including the UEFA Champions League. On non-matchdays the venue opens to the public for stadium tours, visits to the Chelsea FC Museum and accommodation at the Millennium & Copthorne Hotels located within the complex itself.
Historie
Cesta časem
Stamford Bridge has more than 140 years of history, reflecting the evolution of English football and the turbulent fortunes of one of the world's wealthiest clubs.
Construction and opening
The site was developed as an athletics ground in 1877 and designed by architect Archibald Leitch, the Scottish specialist responsible for dozens of British grounds. The original plans envisaged use for athletics and cricket, but football arrived in 1905 when Chelsea FC was founded specifically to occupy the stadium. The first league fixture was played on 2 September 1905.
Major renovations
After decades of modest upkeep, Stamford Bridge underwent a thorough transformation during the 1990s, when the old open terraces were progressively demolished and replaced by four covered stands. The result was the Matthew Harding Stand (north), East Stand, West Stand and Shed End (south), which together give the stadium its current appearance. The redevelopment also incorporated the hotels and commercial facilities that now form an integral part of the complex.
Notable moments
Stamford Bridge witnessed Chelsea's first First Division title in 1955. The stadium later became the stage for the club's golden era under Jose Mourinho (2004-2006), when back-to-back Premier League titles were secured. In 2012 it hosted the semi-final second leg against Barcelona that sent Chelsea to the UCL Final, where they claimed their first Champions League trophy. Subsequent Premier League triumphs in 2014/15 and 2016/17 confirmed Stamford Bridge as a venue of sustained top-level football.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
The atmosphere at Stamford Bridge is intense and vocal, driven above all by the Matthew Harding Stand and the Shed End, where the club's most passionate supporters gather. The stadium has a well-earned reputation as a fortress where visiting sides rarely feel comfortable.
Fan culture
Chelsea supporters are known for their loud backing and varied songbook, the most famous entry being Blue is the Colour, the club anthem since 1972. The Shed End is traditionally home to the loudest ultras, while the Matthew Harding Stand is named after a much-loved vice-chairman who died in a helicopter crash in 1996. The supporter base reflects the cosmopolitan nature of south-west London, drawing fans from across the city and beyond.
Big matches
Among the most memorable nights at Stamford Bridge is the 2012 Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, when a 1-0 win sent Chelsea to the Munich final and eventual penalty shoot-out glory. Equally gripping was the 2005 league decider against Liverpool that sealed the Premier League title. Every London Derby against Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur or West Ham United generates an electric atmosphere inside the compact ground.
