Přehled
O stadionu
St James' Park is a football stadium in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne in north-east England and the home of Newcastle United F.C. since 1880. With a capacity of 52,405, it is one of the largest grounds in the Premier League and its twin-decked stands form one of the most recognisable skylines of any English city centre. The steep, enclosed bowl delivers an atmosphere that ranks among the loudest in the top flight.
Location and surroundings
Uniquely among major English football grounds, St James' Park stands almost within the commercial centre of Newcastle — the Milburn and Leazes stands tower above the surrounding streets and are visible from across the city. The adjacent Leazes Park, city-centre bars, and streets packed with matchday supporters make the approach to the ground a distinctive urban experience entirely unlike edge-of-city stadium visits.
Main uses
The stadium serves exclusively as the home ground of Newcastle United F.C. for Premier League fixtures and domestic and European cup competition. Its capacity of over 52,000 places it consistently among the five largest club football grounds in England. The complex also accommodates the club museum and year-round public stadium tours.
Historie
Cesta časem
St James' Park has been a football venue since 1880, making it one of the longest continuously used football grounds in England — a longevity matched by the intensity of the city's relationship with its club.
Construction and opening
Newcastle United F.C. was formally established in 1892 through the merger of two local clubs and took permanent possession of St James' Park from that point. The ground's architectural heritage includes a 1906 stand by Archibald Leitch, the pioneering Scottish stadium designer whose work shaped many of Britain's classic football venues. For much of the twentieth century the capacity and facilities lagged behind the ambitions of the club and its supporters.
Major renovations
Transformation came in waves: the Milburn Stand (1987) began modernisation, followed by the Sir John Hall Stand (1993), which significantly increased capacity. The landmark double-decker Leazes End completed in 2000 pushed capacity above 52,000 and gave the ground its current iconic profile. In 2011, the stadium was temporarily renamed the Sports Direct Arena under a commercial sponsorship deal with then-owner Mike Ashley; the name St James' Park was restored in 2012 following fan pressure and has remained since.
Notable moments
St James' Park hosted matches at the 1966 FIFA World Cup and was the stage for Newcastle United's most celebrated era under Kevin Keegan in the mid-1990s, when the club mounted a memorable Premier League title challenge. The 4-3 victory over Liverpool in April 1996 is widely regarded as one of the greatest Premier League matches ever played. The stadium has since witnessed new chapters, including the club's 2021 Saudi-led takeover and its subsequent return to European competition.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
St James' Park generates one of the loudest and most immediate atmospheres in the Premier League, a product of its enclosed double-decked stands, central urban location, and a fanbase that has sustained extraordinary loyalty through years of under-investment and underachievement.
Fan culture
The Gallowgate End at the southern end of the ground is the traditional home of the most vocal Newcastle Magpies supporters, and its wall of noise defines the matchday sound of St James' Park. The approach to the ground through Newcastle city centre is itself part of the experience — pubs, streets, and the metro all fill with the black and white of Newcastle United well before kick-off. The Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland is one of the most passionately contested fixtures in English football, with the stadium atmosphere reaching a particular intensity on those occasions.
Big matches
The 4-3 league win over Liverpool in April 1996 — often cited as the best Premier League match ever — remains the defining memory of the Keegan era. St James' Park has also hosted UEFA Cup and Champions League qualifying nights that generated some of the loudest atmospheres in English club football. The 2021 takeover by a Saudi-led consortium restored ambition to the club and sparked a revival in attendances and atmosphere that has made St James' Park once again one of the Premier League's most compelling venues.
Praktické info
Návštěva stadionu
St James' Park is exceptionally accessible by the standards of major English football grounds, benefiting from a city-centre location directly served by Newcastle's Metro system.
How to get there
- Metro (Tyne and Wear Metro): the St James' station exits directly beside the stadium; the journey from Newcastle Central station takes 3 minutes
- Train: Newcastle Central station is a 10-minute walk; intercity trains connect from London King's Cross, Edinburgh, and across north-east England
- Bus: numerous city bus routes serve the surrounding streets; the city centre is a short walk from most arrival points
- Car: city-centre parking is limited and expensive on matchdays; park-and-ride with Metro is strongly recommended
Tickets and tours
Match tickets for Newcastle United are sold via the official club website. High-demand Premier League fixtures sell out well in advance for non-season-ticket holders. The stadium tour covers the club museum, dressing rooms, player tunnel and pitch-side view and operates on non-matchdays throughout the year.
Visitor tips
- When to arrive: allow at least 60 minutes before kick-off; the St James' Metro station is heavily congested after the final whistle, so plan for a wait or walk to an adjacent stop
- Views: upper tiers of the Leazes or Milburn stands offer sweeping views across Newcastle city centre — worth noting even for neutral visitors
- Food and drink: the best pre-match atmosphere is found in the pubs of the nearby Bigg Market and Grainger Town; the city centre is lively on matchdays from mid-morning onwards
