Overview
About the stadium
Estadio Ramón Tahuichi Aguilera Costas is the main football stadium of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia's largest city and the heart of the country's tropical eastern lowlands. Unlike the famous high-altitude arenas of La Paz, it sits at roughly 400 metres above sea level, meaning matches are played in humid heat rather than thin Andean air. With a capacity of around 31,400 spectators, it is home to two of Bolivia's most traditional clubs, Oriente Petrolero and Blooming, and occasionally hosts the Bolivia national team.
The home of lowland football
The ground stands on Avenida San Aurelio, close to the city centre. Its natural-grass pitch measures 105 × 64.7 m, and a major modernisation between 2014 and 2021 added new lighting, facilities, parking and thousands of fresh seats.

History
Journey through time
Ground was broken on 28 January 1938 and the stadium was inaugurated on 25 May 1940. From the outset it became the focal point of football in Santa Cruz, a region whose passion for the game eventually rivalled the traditional highland strongholds.
Named after Tahuichi Aguilera
The venue has carried its current name since 1980, when it was renamed in honour of Ramón "Tahuichi" Aguilera Costas, founder of the renowned youth Tahuichi Academy. The change followed the academy's under-15 side winning an international tournament in Argentina. Aguilera became a symbol of grassroots talent development, and the stadium still bears his name.

The ground is shared by the city's two biggest clubs, Oriente Petrolero and Blooming, alongside others such as Destroyers and Royal Pari.
Atmosphere
Matchday
The atmosphere at the "Tahuichi" crackles with lowland energy. Santa Cruz lives for football, and any meeting of the two local giants turns the stands into a sea of colour and song. The humid tropical heat gives the game a character all its own — visiting teams from the cooler highlands rarely enjoy the trip.
The Oriente vs Blooming derby
The highlight of the season is the clásico cruceño, the city derby between Oriente Petrolero (traditional green-and-white) and Blooming (sky blue). When the two camps meet, the stadium is packed to the rafters and the rivalry divides the entire city. Drums, banners and relentless singing sustain the noise until the final whistle.
- Marquee event: the Oriente vs Blooming city derby
- Conditions: humid tropical lowland heat
- The stands: drums, choreography and loud chanting
The stadium also hosted five matches at the 1997 Copa América and the national team on occasion, so it has seen its share of big international nights.
Practical info
Visiting the stadium
The stadium stands on Avenida San Aurelio in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, near the centre of Bolivia's largest city. Its flat lowland setting makes access easier than at the mountain arenas — but expect tropical heat and humidity year-round.
Getting there and matchday tips
- Transport: taxis and ride apps are simplest; city minibuses (micros) stop nearby
- Airport: Viru Viru International lies about 15 km north of the centre
- Timing: arrive early, as the area around the ground gets busy
- What to wear: light clothing, water and sunscreen for the heat
- Nearby: the central Plaza 24 de Septiembre, the cathedral and the cafés of the historic core
After modernisation the stadium offers better facilities, parking and lighting for evening fixtures. Before visiting, check which club (Oriente Petrolero or Blooming) is playing at home.
