Overview

About the stadium

The Estadio Félix Capriles is the main football stadium of Cochabamba, a city set in the fertile central valley of Bolivia. With a capacity of roughly 32,100 spectators, it ranks among the region's largest and most important sporting venues and forms the heart of local football life.

Home to two clubs

The ground serves as the home of two traditional clubs: Club Jorge Wilstermann and Club Aurora. Both teams play their fixtures here in Bolivia's top division, sharing the stadium across the season.

  • City: Cochabamba, Bolivia
  • Capacity: approximately 32,100 seats
  • Main use: matches of the resident clubs and the national team
  • Altitude: around 2,567 m, noticeably lower than La Paz or Oruro

Thanks to its valley setting, Cochabamba enjoys a milder climate and more bearable altitude, making the Félix Capriles a favourite venue for players and supporters from across Bolivia.

History

Journey through time

The Estadio Félix Capriles opened back in 1938 and has since undergone several rebuilds and modernisations that have kept it among Bolivia's leading arenas. Successive works in 1992, 1997 and 2018 expanded its capacity and improved its facilities.

Great moments and clubs

The stadium's most celebrated moment came during the 1963 Copa América, when Bolivia beat Brazil 5–4 here to claim their first continental title. The arena also hosted matches at the 1997 Copa América and was renovated for the 2018 South American Games.

  • Opened: 1938
  • Copa América: 1963 (Bolivia's title) and 1997
  • South American Games: renovation in 2018

The two resident clubs carry long histories: Jorge Wilstermann, named after a pioneer of Bolivian aviation, and Aurora are traditional pillars of football in Cochabamba, and their meetings frame the stadium's story.

Atmosphere

Matchday

The atmosphere at the Estadio Félix Capriles is at its fiercest when Jorge Wilstermann take the field. Nicknamed "los aviadores" (the aviators), the club commands a passionate fan base in Cochabamba whose supporters fill the stands with the team's red colours and loud singing.

The Cochabamba derby

The season's highlight is the city derby between Wilstermann and Aurora. This rivalry divides the city, and the stadium turns into a cauldron of emotion, drums and banners.

  • Wilstermann: red colours, the "aviadores" nickname, passionate support
  • Derby: Wilstermann vs. Aurora, the heart of Cochabamba football
  • National team: Bolivia's matches draw fans from across the valley

Cochabamba is known for its football culture, and the Félix Capriles is where that passion plays out in full — from family outings to a match to the noisy supporter sections.

Practical info

Visiting the stadium

The Estadio Félix Capriles sits right inside the city of Cochabamba, in a sports complex close to the centre, making it easy to reach on foot or by public transport. The surroundings offer parks and other sporting facilities.

Practical tips

The altitude of around 2,567 m is noticeable but far milder than La Paz (3,600 m) or Oruro — visitors from lowland areas should still take it easy on their first day.

  • Location: sports complex in Cochabamba, near the centre
  • Transport: city minibuses (trufis), taxis or on foot
  • Altitude: ~2,567 m — drink plenty of water and allow a day to acclimatise
  • Matchday: arrive early, the atmosphere builds well before kick-off
  • Nearby: Cochabamba's centre, restaurants with local cuisine, the Cristo de la Concordia statue

The venue is ideal for combining a football visit with a tour of one of Bolivia's most pleasant cities.
