Přehled

O stadionu

Estadio de la Ceramica, historically known as El Madrigal, is a football stadium in the city of Villarreal (Valencian: Vila-real), in the province of Castellon on Spain's eastern Mediterranean coast. It has served as the home ground of Villarreal CF — the Yellow Submarine of La Liga — since 1923. The current capacity stands at 23,500 seats.

Location and surroundings

The stadium sits in the heart of Villarreal, a city of around 50,000 inhabitants located approximately 50 km north of Valencia along the Mediterranean coast. The area has deep historical ties to the ceramic industry — the basis of the stadium's name since 2017, when it was renamed to honour the local manufacturing tradition. The surroundings are compact and urban; the stadium is easily reachable on foot from Villarreal railway station.

Main uses

Estadio de la Ceramica is the home of Villarreal CF for La Liga matches and European competitions. Despite its modest capacity, the stadium has staged continental football at the highest level — Villarreal won the UEFA Europa League 2020/21 and reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2005/06, making the ground a respected stop for any football tourist visiting the Valencia region.

Historie

Cesta časem

The history of the stadium stretches back to 1923, when Villarreal CF first played on the El Madrigal pitch. Over more than a century this ground has mirrored the rise of a small club from a ceramic-manufacturing town into a fixture of European football.

Construction and opening

The stadium was established in 1923 and for decades carried the informal name El Madrigal. The original venue was modest in scale, reflecting the size of the city. Throughout the second half of the twentieth century Villarreal CF gradually climbed through the Spanish football pyramid, and the stadium was incrementally expanded to match the club's growing ambitions, eventually reaching its current capacity of 23,500 seats.

Major renovations

The most significant modern milestone was the renaming in 2017 — from the informal El Madrigal to the official Estadio de la Ceramica. The new name pays tribute to the ceramic industry that has historically been the economic backbone of Villarreal and the source of the city's prosperity. Interior upgrades and technical improvements were carried out through the 2000s and 2010s in parallel with the financial growth of the club under president Fernando Roig.

Notable moments

The greatest achievement in the club's history arrived in 2021 when Villarreal CF won the UEFA Europa League, defeating Manchester United on penalties — 11-10 — after a goalless draw in Gdansk. Goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli scored the decisive spot kick and saved David de Gea's effort to clinch the trophy. The stadium also witnessed the dramatic UEFA Champions League semi-final in 2005/06, when Villarreal pushed Arsenal all the way to a penalty shootout.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

The atmosphere at Estadio de la Ceramica punches well above its modest dimensions. A city of 50,000 generating European nights that major clubs fear is the defining paradox of Villarreal CF, and the stadium captures that spirit entirely.

Fan culture

Villarreal CF — nicknamed the Yellow Submarine (El Submarino Amarillo) — are more than a football club for the locals; they are the emblem of a small industrial city that has earned its place among Europe's elite. Fan culture is family-oriented and community-driven, without the edge of big-city derbies but with an intensity born of genuine pride. The stands fill with vivid yellow, chanting starts long before kick-off, and the club's identity remains inseparable from the ceramic industry that funded its rise.

Big matches

The Champions League semi-final against Arsenal in 2005/06 was a watershed moment — the stadium pulsed with electricity that few venues twice its size could match, and Villarreal fell only on penalties. European nights in the UEFA Cup, Europa League, and Champions League have consistently transformed the compact arena into one of Spain's most atmospheric grounds. The 2021 Europa League triumph — celebrated in the streets of Villarreal while the stadium sat empty under COVID restrictions — demonstrated how deeply the club is woven into the city's identity.

Praktické info

Návštěva stadionu

Estadio de la Ceramica is ideally visited as a day trip from Valencia or as a stop along the Mediterranean coast. The stadium is in the city centre and entirely accessible without a car.

How to get there

  • Train: Cercanias (Renfe) service from Valencia runs directly to Villarreal station; the journey takes approximately 45 minutes with frequent departures
  • Car: Motorway A-7 (E-15), exit Vila-real; parking is available around the stadium, but arriving early on matchdays is advisable
  • Walking: Villarreal railway station is about 10 minutes' walk from the stadium in the city centre

Tickets and tours

Match tickets are sold by Villarreal CF through the official club website and the stadium box office. European fixtures tend to sell out — purchasing in advance is strongly recommended. The club offers museum and stadium tours (El Madrigal Tour) covering the players' tunnel, dressing rooms, club trophies including the UEFA Europa League trophy, and stand access.

Visitor tips

  • When to arrive: At least 60 minutes before kick-off; bars and restaurants in Villarreal city centre are the traditional pre-match gathering point
  • Day trip from Valencia: Valencia makes an excellent base — frequent trains allow a full day in Villarreal including a stadium tour
  • Museum: Worth visiting on non-matchdays too — the Europa League trophy alone justifies the trip
  • Language: Spanish and Valencian (a Catalan dialect) are both spoken; basic Spanish is entirely sufficient
