Přehled
O stadionu
Emirates Stadium, officially known as Ashburton Grove, is a football stadium in the Holloway district of the London Borough of Islington. It has been the home of Arsenal F.C. since 2006 and, with a seated capacity of 60,704, is the fourth-largest football stadium in England — behind Wembley, Old Trafford, and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The naming rights are held by Dubai-based carrier Emirates.
Location and surroundings
The stadium was constructed on a former industrial brownfield site in north London, roughly 500 metres from Arsenal's previous home at the legendary Highbury. The surrounding Holloway neighbourhood is densely residential and characteristically London in feel, with housing, shops, and pubs immediately adjacent to the ground. Arsenal underground station on the Piccadilly line is under a minute's walk from the turnstiles.
Main uses
The stadium serves as the exclusive home ground of Arsenal F.C. for Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA competition fixtures. Since 2024 it has also been the home of Arsenal W.F.C. The wider complex includes a club museum, public stadium tours, and commercial facilities.
Historie
Cesta časem
The creation of Emirates Stadium was the culmination of years of planning by Arsenal as the club sought to escape the capacity constraints of Highbury and build a ground befitting one of England's most successful clubs.
Construction and opening
The stadium was designed by Populous (at the time trading as HOK Sport). Construction on the Ashburton Grove brownfield began in 2004 and took approximately two years to complete. The stadium formally opened on 22 July 2006 with a pre-season friendly, and Arsenal played their first competitive league match there in August 2006. Initial capacity was 60,355 seats, since increased to the current 60,704. The move from Highbury delivered a significant uplift in matchday revenue for the club.
Major renovations
Since its opening, the stadium has undergone relatively few structural changes; the Populous design incorporated flexibility from the outset. Principal updates have focused on commercial facilities, digital and broadcast infrastructure, and the adaptation of facilities to accommodate the women's team from 2024.
Notable moments
Emirates has hosted numerous UEFA Champions League nights against AC Milan, Barcelona, and Real Madrid. The stadium was the stage for Arsenal's long Premier League title challenge in 2023/24, when the club led the table for months before finishing second — the closest the club had come to the championship since 2004. These near-misses and European evenings have given the ground its own defining chapter distinct from the Highbury era.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
Emirates Stadium carries a reputation as one of the quieter venues in the Premier League, a critique that Arsenal supporters have long debated and actively sought to address. At its best, however — on European nights and during a title run — the ground produces an atmosphere that rivals any in English football.
Fan culture
The most vocal sections of the support are traditionally concentrated in the Clock End and the standing area introduced in recent seasons. The move from intimate Highbury to a larger, more corporate environment created an adjustment for many long-standing supporters. As Arsenal returned to title contention, attendances and energy levels rose markedly, and the ground has undergone a noticeable shift in character. The north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur remains the most charged fixture of the season at Emirates, producing the highest noise levels and most intense atmosphere the stadium generates.
Big matches
Emirates has been the setting for some of Arsenal's most memorable European evenings in the Champions League era — fixtures against elite opponents that tested the calibre of the stadium's atmosphere. The 2023/24 Premier League campaign, in which Arsenal occupied first place for extended stretches before finishing runners-up, showed the ground at its finest: 60,000 supporters locked in tension and belief across a full season. Each title challenge reactivates a spirit in Emirates that connects the new stadium with the intensity that defined Highbury before it.
Praktické info
Návštěva stadionu
Emirates Stadium is one of the most accessible football grounds in London, served by multiple public transport options and with well-established visitor facilities managed by Arsenal F.C.
How to get there
- Underground: Arsenal station on the Piccadilly line is approximately 5 minutes on foot — the most convenient option
- Underground (alternative): Holloway Road (Piccadilly) or Finsbury Park (Victoria, Great Northern) are within a 10-minute walk
- Overground: Drayton Park station is immediately adjacent to the stadium and operates on matchdays
- Car: street parking near the ground is very limited; public transport is strongly recommended
Tickets and tours
Match tickets for Arsenal F.C. are sold via the official club website. North London derby fixtures against Spurs and UEFA Champions League ties sell out rapidly. The Emirates Stadium Tour covers the changing rooms, players' tunnel, press conference room, and the Arsenal museum — open daily on non-matchdays and among London's most popular football tourism experiences.
Visitor tips
- When to arrive: plan to be at the ground at least 60 minutes before kick-off; Arsenal station becomes congested and queues at the turnstiles can be long
- Museum: accessible without a match ticket and well suited to both supporters and general visitors
- Food and drink: pubs and restaurants are plentiful throughout Holloway and the Highbury area; the pre-match atmosphere builds across the whole neighbourhood
