El Sadar Stadium

The history of Estadio El Sadar is inseparable from the story of CA Osasuna, a club born from the Basque-Navarrese culture and working-class pride of Pamplona. The first ground on this site opened in 1967, named after the nearby Sadar stream, a tributary of the river Arga.

Construction and early years

The stadium was built as a modern replacement for the previously used Estadio San Juan and quickly became the beating heart of Navarrese football. Its original capacity suited the standards of Spanish football at the time, and Osasuna rapidly built a loyal support base within its stands. Incremental upgrades followed through the 1980s and 1990s as the club oscillated between the top two divisions of Spanish football.

Sponsorship name and return to identity

Between 2005 and 2011 the ground carried the commercial name Estadio Reyno de Navarra, following a sponsorship agreement with the regional government of Navarre. When the deal expired, the stadium reverted immediately to its original and beloved name El Sadar — proof that some identities are stronger than commercial interests.

Reconstruction 2018-2020

The landmark event in the arena's modern history was a complete demolition and reconstruction carried out in 2018-2020. During the works, Osasuna played their home fixtures first at Anoeta in San Sebastian and later at Estadio de la Ceramica in Villarreal. The result is a state-of-the-art enclosed stadium with a roof over all four stands and a capacity of 23,516 seats. The closed-bowl design dramatically amplifies noise levels and has transformed El Sadar into one of the most acoustically intense venues in Spanish football.

The atmosphere at Estadio El Sadar is consistently rated among the best in La Liga and is widely regarded as one of the most intense in Spanish football. Osasuna supporters — the rojillos (little reds) — are celebrated for extraordinary volume, unity and unconditional loyalty to a club that has long balanced between the divisions.

Fan culture and the Tribuna General

At the heart of El Sadar's supporter culture is the Tribuna General — the standing section where the most committed fans congregate and generate the chants and rhythms that cascade around the bowl. Osasuna supporters are renowned for singing regardless of the scoreline, a culture rooted in the regional identity of Navarre: the club is perceived as a community institution rather than a corporate enterprise, and supporters treat it with a sense of genuine ownership. The closed-bowl effect

The 2018-2020 reconstruction turned El Sadar into an acoustic trap for visiting teams. The enclosed design traps sound inside the stadium and produces an atmosphere that — even at a capacity of fewer than 24,000 seats — rivals arenas twice its size. Major occasions — wins against Real Madrid or Barcelona, and European nights — remain in collective memory as moments when the entire stadium moved as a single vibrating organism.

Estadio El Sadar is located in the southern part of Pamplona and is easily reached by city bus or on foot from the historic centre.

• Bus (TCC Pamplona): Pamplona's city bus network runs services close to El Sadar; extra services operate on matchdays and signage guides supporters from the city centre
• Walking: From Pamplona's historic centre the walk takes approximately 25-35 minutes along a comfortable, well-signposted route
• Car: Parking is available in the vicinity of the ground; arriving well in advance on matchdays is recommended; Pamplona's bus station is roughly 3 km away
• Train: Pamplona has rail connections with Madrid, Zaragoza and Bilbao; from the station the stadium is reachable by city bus or taxi

Tickets and tours

CA Osasuna sell match tickets through the official club website and at the stadium box office. For high-demand fixtures — visits from Real Madrid or Barcelona, and European ties — purchasing in advance is strongly recommended. The club offers stadium tours covering the dressing rooms, the players' tunnel and a permanent exhibition on Osasuna's history.

• When to arrive: At least 60 minutes before kick-off; the bars around the stadium fill with rojillos well before the whistle
