O stadionu

Cluj Arena is a multi-purpose stadium in Cluj-Napoca, the capital of Transylvania in north-western Romania, officially opened on 1 October 2011. The venue holds 30,000 spectators and was designed by local firm Dico și Țigănaș. Owned by the Cluj County Council, it serves as the home ground of FC Universitatea Cluj (widely known as 'U' Cluj), a top-flight club in the Romanian Liga I. The arena replaced the historic Stadionul Ion Moina, which had been Universitatea's home from 1919 until the end of the 2007-08 season.

Location and surroundings

The stadium is located in Cluj-Napoca, Romania's second-largest city with approximately 300,000 inhabitants and a major university and cultural centre of the Transylvania region. The arena sits close to the city's central districts; the historic main square Piața Unirii and the Gothic Church of Saint Michael are just a few minutes away by car or on foot. The surrounding area is well connected by public transport and the city is easily accessible by rail and road from across Romania.

Main uses

Cluj Arena is explicitly designed as a multi-purpose venue: in addition to football, it features an athletics track and is certified for rugby union fixtures. It is also the annual home of the Untold Festival, one of Europe's largest electronic dance music festivals, which has been held at the arena since 2015 and regularly draws international crowds of tens of thousands.

Construction and opening

Cluj Arena was built as part of a broader wave of stadium modernisation in Romania in the late 2000s and early 2010s. The project was designed by Cluj-based architectural practice Dico și Țigănaș and delivered at a standard befitting a modern European multi-use venue. The arena was officially inaugurated on 1 October 2011, becoming one of the most up-to-date sports facilities in Romania at the time of its opening.

The new stadium directly succeeded the Stadionul Ion Moina, which had served Universitatea Cluj since 1919 -- a span of nearly ninety years. Ion Moina stadium closed for first-team football at the end of the 2007-08 season, leaving the club and its supporters without a permanent home for several years before the new arena opened.

Major renovations

No significant structural renovations have been publicly recorded since the stadium opened in 2011. The facility maintains its original capacity of 30,000 seats and continues to operate to the multi-purpose standard for which it was designed. Its dual function as a football ground and major events venue -- above all the Untold Festival -- has kept the infrastructure in regular use throughout the year.

Notable moments

Cluj Arena has been the stage for the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League qualifying campaigns of CFR Cluj, who have been consistent participants in European competition since the late 2000s. The arena has also hosted the intense local derby between CFR Cluj and FC Universitatea Cluj, one of the most passionate fixtures in Romanian club football. Off the pitch, the venue's international profile has been significantly raised by the Untold Festival, which has brought hundreds of thousands of visitors to Cluj-Napoca since 2015.

Fan culture

Cluj-Napoca is exceptional in Romanian football for hosting two rival clubs with deep historical roots and fiercely loyal support bases. FC Universitatea Cluj ('U' Cluj) draws its identity from the city's academic and intellectual tradition, while CFR Cluj -- originally associated with the national railway company -- has built a dominant modern profile backed by investment and repeated Romanian championship titles. The rivalry between the two is one of the most intense in the country and gives the stadium a charged atmosphere whenever the two sides meet.

Support for FC Universitatea Cluj is rooted in the club's claim to represent the historical continuity of the Universitatea name, a matter that has been contested and litigated over the years. The fan community is vocal, passionate and closely tied to the city's student culture.

Big matches

The biggest nights at Cluj Arena have come with CFR Cluj's European campaigns. The club reached the UEFA Champions League group stage in 2008-09 and has returned to European competition repeatedly since. Matches against high-profile opponents from across the continent have brought European football to Transylvania and generated some of the loudest atmospheres in the stadium's history. Local derbies against FC Universitatea Cluj offer a different but equally intense experience, with both sets of supporters filling the stands in colour and noise.
