O stadionu

Arena Națională is a multi-purpose stadium in Bucharest, Romania, opened in 2011. With a capacity of 54,432 seats it is the largest stadium in Romania and among the largest in the Balkans and wider south-eastern Europe. The arena was designed by the renowned German practice Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp), architects responsible for numerous landmark European sports venues. Its fully enclosed roof and retractable pitch system meet UEFA Category 4 standards, qualifying it to host the most prestigious continental finals.

Location and surroundings

The stadium is located in the Tineretului district of south-central Bucharest, adjacent to the park of the same name. It was built on the exact footprint of its predecessor, the Stadionul Național (formerly Stadionul 23 August), which was demolished to make way for the new arena. The surrounding area is predominantly residential and well connected to public transport; the nearest metro station, Piața Tineretului (Line 2), is approximately ten minutes on foot.

Main uses

Arena Națională is the primary home of the Romania national football team and Bucharest club FCSB (formerly Steaua București). Beyond football, the venue regularly hosts athletics meetings, rugby internationals and large-scale music concerts; major artists including Madonna, Depeche Mode and Robbie Williams have performed on its stage.

Demolition and construction

The site of Arena Națională was previously occupied by the Stadionul Național, opened in 1953 under the name Stadionul 23 August. That historic ground once held more than 60,000 spectators and served as the main stage for Romanian football for decades. By the late 2000s its condition and facilities no longer met UEFA requirements for top-level European competition, prompting the Romanian government to commission a modern replacement.

The design was entrusted to Gerkan, Marg and Partners, the German firm also responsible for the renovated Olympiastadion in Berlin. Construction ran from 2008 to 2011 at a cost of approximately 234 million euros. The arena was officially inaugurated on 6 September 2011 with a friendly international between Romania and France.

UEFA Europa League Final 2012

Barely a year after opening, the stadium became the centre of European football. On 9 May 2012 it hosted the UEFA Europa League Final, in which Atlético Madrid defeated Athletic Bilbao 3-0. Radamel Falcao scored twice and Diego was also on the scoresheet in a dominant display by the Madrid side. It was the first European club final staged in Bucharest, and the arena delivered a near-capacity crowd of over 52,000.

UEFA EURO 2020

In the summer of 2021 -- the tournament having been postponed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic -- Arena Națională served as one of twelve host venues for UEFA EURO 2020. Bucharest staged four matches: three in Group C and one quarter-final. The group-stage programme included fixtures for Austria, North Macedonia, Ukraine and the Netherlands. The quarter-final brought the high-profile clash of England and Germany, won 2-0 by England. The tournament confirmed the arena's standing as a premier European football destination.

Atmosféra

National team identity and FCSB supporters

The atmosphere at Arena Națională varies considerably with the occasion. National team fixtures against traditional regional rivals -- above all Hungary and other Balkan opponents -- regularly fill the stadium and generate an intense, partisan atmosphere. Romanian supporters are passionate about the tricolor and qualification deciders have produced some of the loudest nights in the arena's short history.

For FCSB (formerly Steaua București) matches, the Ultras Sud group provides the most vocal support. The club's cross-city derbies with Dinamo București and Rapid București are among the most charged occasions in Central and Eastern European club football, marked by elaborate tifos, relentless chanting and a fierce sense of local identity.

Landmark events

The 2012 UEFA Europa League Final -- Atlético Madrid 3-0 Athletic Bilbao -- remains the defining moment in the arena's international history. Radamel Falcao's brace in front of a packed house announced Bucharest as a capable host of continental showpiece events. The EURO 2020 fixtures in 2021 reinforced that reputation, with the England vs Germany quarter-final in particular drawing global television audiences. Outside football, the arena's 50,000-plus capacity has made it one of the most sought-after concert venues in south-eastern Europe.

  • Tram: Lines 1 and 10 stop close to the ground; the journey from the city centre takes around 15--20 minutes.
  • Taxi / rideshare: Uber, Bolt and local app Clever are widely available; from Piața Unirii the ride takes 10--15 minutes depending on traffic.

Tickets and fixtures

Tickets for Romania national team matches are sold via the federation portal at frf.ro. FCSB match tickets are available through the club's official website and stadium box offices. The arena's capacity of 54,432 means important qualifying fixtures can sell out within days of going on sale.
