City of Manchester Stadium

The City of Manchester Stadium was born from the city's bid to stage the 2002 Commonwealth Games and represents one of the most significant conversions of a multi-sport arena into a dedicated football ground in English history.

Designed by Populous (then HOK Sport), construction began in 1999. The stadium initially opened as an athletics venue for the Commonwealth Games with an approximate capacity of 38,000 and a full running track.
