Přehled

O stadionu

Etihad Stadium, officially named the City of Manchester Stadium (abbreviated COMS), is a football stadium in the Eastlands district of east Manchester. It has been the home of Manchester City F.C. since 2003 and, with a capacity of 52,900, is the seventh-largest football stadium in England. The Etihad name has been in use since 2011, when Abu Dhabi-based carrier Etihad Airways acquired the naming rights.

Location and surroundings

The stadium occupies the heart of the Sportcity complex in Eastlands, approximately 3 kilometres east of Manchester city centre. The entire site was developed for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and has since been extensively regenerated. Immediately adjacent are an athletics arena, the National Cycling Centre velodrome, and the City Football Academy training campus. The surrounding neighbourhood is predominantly industrial-residential in character and lacks the traditional pub-lined streets common around older English grounds.

Main uses

The stadium serves as the exclusive home of Manchester City F.C. for Premier League, FA Cup, and European competition fixtures. It also hosts selected England international matches and major concert events. The wider Sportcity complex incorporates training facilities and the club's youth academy infrastructure.

Historie

Cesta časem

The City of Manchester Stadium was born from the city's bid to stage the 2002 Commonwealth Games and represents one of the most significant conversions of a multi-sport arena into a dedicated football ground in English history.

Construction and opening

Designed by Populous (then HOK Sport), construction began in 1999. The stadium initially opened as an athletics venue for the Commonwealth Games with an approximate capacity of 38,000 and a full running track. After the Games concluded, the facility was converted for football use — the athletics track was removed, the southern end completed, and the capacity expanded. Manchester City took occupancy in 2003 and staged a pre-season friendly against Barcelona to mark the opening of the football-configured ground.

Major renovations

The most significant structural change came in 2015, when a third tier was added to the North Stand, raising capacity to the current 52,900. The club has publicly discussed further expansion that could take the stadium beyond 60,000 seats, which would significantly close the gap with rival Old Trafford.

Notable moments

Etihad was the stage for one of the most dramatic moments in Premier League history: Sergio Agüero's 93:20 goal against QPR on the final day of the 2011/12 season, which clinched the title on goal difference. The stadium has since hosted title celebrations in 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22, and 2022/23, as well as the send-off before the 2022/23 Champions League final victory that completed an historic treble.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

Etihad Stadium has become one of the most formidable venues in the Premier League across recent seasons, reflecting the transformation of Manchester City from mid-table regulars to the dominant force in English football. The stadium lacks the traditional street-level pub culture of older grounds but compensates with scale and intensity on big occasions.

Fan culture

The most vocal sections of support are concentrated in the South Stand and Colin Bell Stand. The supporter base has evolved dramatically since the Abu Dhabi ownership takeover in 2008 — a mix of long-standing City fans, newer converts drawn by the club's success, and a growing international following. The Manchester derby against Manchester United generates the highest atmosphere levels of any home fixture, with the heightened stakes of city rivalry amplifying every moment.

Big matches

Etihad has been the setting for some of the defining nights of the Pep Guardiola era since 2016, including multi-leg Champions League wins over elite European opposition on the path to the 2022/23 final in Istanbul. The legendary last-day title clincher of 2011/12 remains the single most intense moment the stadium has witnessed. As City have accumulated trophies and raised expectations, Etihad has developed a reputation as one of the hardest grounds to visit in England.

Praktické info

Návštěva stadionu

Etihad Stadium is located away from Manchester city centre but is well served by tram and rail connections that make matchday travel straightforward.

How to get there

  • Tram (Metrolink): Etihad Campus stop on the Ashton line is approximately 15 minutes from the city centre — the most convenient matchday option
  • Train: Manchester Piccadilly is roughly 2 km away on foot or a short tram ride; Manchester Victoria is also accessible
  • Car: parking within the Sportcity complex is available but should be booked in advance; allow extra time for post-match traffic
  • Bus: regular city bus services connect the city centre to Eastlands and are reinforced on matchdays

Tickets and tours

Match tickets for Manchester City are sold via the official club website; season tickets are in extremely high demand and the waiting list is long. The Etihad Stadium Tour covers the dressing rooms, players' tunnel, dugouts, and the Manchester City museum — available daily on non-matchdays and rated among the top football stadium experiences in England.

Visitor tips

  • When to arrive: aim to be at the ground at least 60 minutes before kick-off; Metrolink services fill up quickly and queues at the tram stop can be lengthy
  • Museum: open without a match ticket and traces the club from its modest origins to the trophy-laden Guardiola era
  • Food and drink: the Sportcity area has fewer traditional pubs than older English grounds; Manchester city centre — a short tram ride away — offers far more options before and after the game
