Přehled
O stadionu
Villa Park is a football stadium in the Aston district of Birmingham, England, and the home of Aston Villa FC since 1897. With a seating capacity of 43,205 it is the eleventh-largest stadium in England and one of the most historically significant football grounds in the country. Designed by the legendary architect Archibald Leitch, it has survived two world wars and hosted both a World Cup and a European Championship.
Location and surroundings
The stadium stands in the north-west of Birmingham in the historic neighbourhood of Aston, close to the baroque Aston Hall. It lies approximately 3 kilometres from Birmingham city centre and is served by two nearby railway stations -- Witton and Aston -- both less than a mile away. The surrounding area is a traditional working-class community that fills with claret-and-blue supporters on matchdays.
Main uses
Villa Park serves primarily as the home ground of Aston Villa FC for Premier League and European fixtures. It is also the iconic venue for FA Cup semi-finals -- no other English stadium has hosted more, with 55 to its name. The ground is open year-round for guided stadium tours and the Aston Villa Heritage Museum.
Historie
Cesta časem
The history of Villa Park stretches back to the final decade of the nineteenth century and mirrors the rise of Aston Villa into one of England's most successful clubs. Its construction and development are closely tied to the signature style of architect Archibald Leitch.
Construction and opening
The stadium opened in 1897 as a redevelopment of the earlier Aston Lower Grounds site. The club had played in the area before, but the systematic reconstruction of 1897 gave the ground a modern identity. Under Archibald Leitch's direction, an iconic main stand with two-tier seating and the characteristic latticework balcony fronts -- hallmarks of Leitch's early twentieth-century output -- were installed.
Key renovations and milestones
The stadium has been expanded several times across its long life. In 1966 Villa Park hosted three FIFA World Cup matches, cementing its international reputation. The most transformative modernisation began in the 1990s: the new Holte End stand was completed in 1994, replacing the original terracing. During UEFA Euro 1996 the stadium hosted four matches, including a quarter-final. More recently, expansions to the North Stand and the Doug Ellis Stand have improved capacity and supporter comfort.
Notable moments
Villa Park was the home base behind Aston Villa's European Cup triumph in 1982 (the final was played in Rotterdam), as well as seven First Division title-winning seasons. The ground has hosted 17 senior England internationals since 1899, the most recent in 2025, and remains the undisputed capital of English FA Cup semi-final history.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
The atmosphere at Villa Park is considered one of the most intense in English football, driven above all by the iconic Holte End -- the stand behind one of the goals that takes its name from the surrounding Holte Hill area.
The Holte End -- the stadium's heartbeat
The Holte End is the most celebrated section of Villa Park. In its original form it was a vast standing terrace that could hold up to 24,000 supporters. After conversion to all-seating in the 1990s it remains the symbol of the club's identity. Supporters in the Holte End are renowned for coordinated singing, colourful choreography and the ability to create a wall of noise that unsettles the opposition. The stand's name derives from the district of Aston, itself rooted in an Old English word for a hilltop settlement.
Big matches and rivalry
The fiercest fixture at Villa Park is the Second City Derby against Birmingham City FC -- one of England's most passionate local rivalries. The ground is also synonymous with dramatic FA Cup ties: 55 semi-finals make it the most-used semi-final venue in the history of the competition. During UEFA Euro 1996 Villa Park hosted the Czech Republic's quarter-final against Portugal, adding an international dimension to its storied matchday legacy.
