The history of José Alvalade is intertwined with more than a century of Sporting CP's existence and with Lisbon's transformation into a modern European city.

The original stadium and construction of a new arena

The first Estádio José Alvalade opened in 1956 and for decades ranked among the largest grounds in Europe. By the turn of the millennium it no longer met UEFA's modern requirements, and a decision was taken to build an entirely new arena on an adjacent plot. The club commissioned architect Tomás Taveira, whose design balances functional efficiency with a strong aesthetic identity. Construction took approximately three years and the stadium was officially inaugurated on 6 August 2003.

Architecture and multicoloured seats

The stadium features four separate stands beneath a fully covered roof and is immediately recognisable for its multicoloured seating — a pattern of green, yellow, white, and black that creates a dynamic visual effect even when the ground is partially empty. The exterior is wrapped in a lightweight fabric facade punctuated by characteristic clerestory windows. The overall design captures Sporting CP's identity and has become an architectural landmark of the Alvalade district.

Notable moments

The stadium hosted the UEFA EURO 2004 semi-final between Greece and the Czech Republic, a match that helped propel Greece to their historic tournament victory. Sporting CP clinched the Primeira Liga title here in 2020/21 — their first championship in 19 years — amid scenes of jubilation. The ground has also been the stage for the Derby de Lisboa against SL Benfica, one of the fiercest rivalries in European club football.

The atmosphere at José Alvalade reaches its peak during Derby de Lisboa and on major European nights with Sporting CP. The green-and-white faithful — nicknamed Leões (Lions) — fill the stadium long before kick-off and sustain a wall of noise throughout the match.

The most active section is the Curva de Torcida, home to the organised supporter groups Torcida Verde and Juventude Leonina. Typical displays combine green-and-white flags, coordinated choreography, pyrotechnics, and continuous singing.
