Přehled

O stadionu

De Grolsch Veste is a football stadium in Enschede, the Netherlands, and the home of FC Twente, one of the country's most established Eredivisie clubs. The all-seated ground holds 30,205 spectators, features undersoil heating and an enclosed roof, and replaces traditional perimeter fencing with a promenade that connects all four stands in a continuous walkway.

Location and surroundings

The stadium occupies a site on the Business & Science Park on the north-western edge of Enschede, adjacent to the University of Twente campus. The setting gives the area a distinctive character -- modern sport and higher education side by side on the same park. Road access from the A35 motorway is direct; local bus services connect the stadium to Enschede city centre on matchdays.

Main uses

The ground serves as the primary home of FC Twente for Eredivisie and European fixtures. Beyond club football, it hosted the UEFA Women's Euro 2017 Final, demonstrating its capacity as an international tournament venue. The stadium's conference and event facilities are also used regularly for corporate gatherings and concerts serving the wider Twente region.

Historie

Cesta časem

The stadium was conceived as a modern replacement for the ageing Diekman Stadion, which FC Twente had used since the 1950s. Both the club and the city of Enschede sought an arena that matched the team's ambitions at the top of Dutch football.

Construction and opening

Designed by IAA Architecten, the stadium opened in 1998 under the name Arke Stadion, reflecting a naming rights deal with the Arke travel company. Initial capacity was approximately 24,000 seats, with provision for future expansion built into the original design.

Renaming and the Grolsch sponsorship

In 2008 the stadium was renamed De Grolsch Veste following a sponsorship agreement with Grolsch brewery, which has deep roots in Enschede and is one of the Netherlands' best-known beer brands. The word veste means fortress or stronghold in Dutch -- a fitting image of the stadium as an impenetrable home fortress for FC Twente.

Expansion and the 2011 roof collapse

Between 2010 and 2011, a major expansion project was underway to raise capacity to approximately 30,000 seats. In April 2011, a section of the newly constructed roof structure collapsed catastrophically. Two workers were killed and several others were injured. Construction was halted, revised with enhanced safety measures, and the stadium eventually reopened at a capacity of 30,205 seats. The tragedy led to extensive legal proceedings and intensified scrutiny of construction safety practices at Dutch sports venues.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

The atmosphere inside De Grolsch Veste is among the most intense in Dutch football. While FC Twente lacks the metropolitan fanbase of Ajax or Feyenoord, the loyalty and volume of supporters from the Twente region have long been respected across the Eredivisie.

Fan culture

Supporters of FC Twente carry a strong sense of regional identity rooted in the Twente area's history as an industrial and textile heartland. The club's red and white colours fill the stands, and fans are known locally as Tukkers -- a nickname for inhabitants of the Twente region derived from the local dialect. The north stand forms the active core of the ground, where chanting continues throughout the match. Atmosphere peaks on European nights when the stadium regularly fills to capacity.

Big moments

The stadium's proudest chapter came around the 2009/10 Eredivisie season, when FC Twente claimed the title -- the club's first and, to date, only league championship. The following season, 2010/11, brought UEFA Champions League group-stage football to Enschede, with opponents including Internazionale and Tottenham Hotspur. In 2017 the stadium staged the UEFA Women's Euro Final in front of 28,000 spectators, cementing its reputation as a venue capable of hosting major international events.
