Přehled

O stadionu

Johan Cruijff ArenA (known as Amsterdam ArenA from 1996 to 2018) is a football stadium in Amsterdam and the home ground of AFC Ajax. With a capacity of 55,865 seats, it is the largest stadium in the Netherlands and the only one in the country equipped with a retractable roof, enabling events to take place in any weather. The stadium was designed by architect Rob Schuurman and opened in 1996. It was officially renamed in 2018 to honour Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff, who died in 2016.

Location and surroundings

The stadium is located in the southeastern part of Amsterdam, in the Bijlmer district (officially Amsterdam Zuidoost). The area is multicultural and densely residential, and sits alongside a large retail and entertainment complex along Arena Boulevard. Transport links are excellent -- Metro lines 50 and 54 connect the ground to Amsterdam Centraal in approximately 15 minutes, and regional Intercity trains also stop at Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA station. The wider complex operates as a destination beyond matchdays, with hotels, cinemas, and the AFAS Live music venue nearby.

Main uses

The stadium serves primarily as the home ground of AFC Ajax for Eredivisie and UEFA competition, and regularly hosts matches for the Dutch national team. It is an established venue for major international tournaments -- it hosted fixtures at UEFA EURO 2000 and was selected as a host city for UEFA EURO 2020 (played in 2021 due to the pandemic). Beyond football, the arena stages large-scale international concerts and events, made possible by its retractable roof.

Historie

Cesta časem

The Johan Cruijff ArenA was born from Ajax's and Amsterdam's ambition to provide the Netherlands with a modern, representative football stadium for the late twentieth century.

Construction and opening

Construction began in 1993 to a design by architect Rob Schuurman. The defining engineering feature was the retractable roof -- a technological rarity at the time -- capable of covering the pitch within minutes. The stadium opened in 1996 with a friendly match between Ajax and AC Milan. Construction costs amounted to approximately 212 million guilders (around 96 million euros), with later estimates placing the total including land and infrastructure at approximately 140 million euros.

Major renovations

Over the years the stadium underwent successive upgrades to its lighting systems, scoreboards, and supporter facilities, keeping pace with modern stadium standards. The most symbolically significant change came in 2018, when the ground was renamed from Amsterdam ArenA to Johan Cruijff ArenA in tribute to Johan Cruyff, the greatest player in Ajax's history. The renaming was approved by both the city of Amsterdam and corporate partners as a permanent act of recognition.

Notable moments

The stadium hosted several fixtures at UEFA EURO 2000, including a semi-final. In 2021 it staged group-stage matches of the delayed UEFA EURO 2020 tournament. In the modern era the arena is best remembered for Ajax's extraordinary run in the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League, when the club defeated Real Madrid (4-1 on aggregate) and Juventus (3-2 on aggregate) to reach the semi-finals -- delivering some of the most dramatic nights in the stadium's history. The ground also carries the legacy of the Ajax sides of the 1990s, when the club dominated European football.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

The atmosphere inside Johan Cruijff ArenA blends the multicultural character of the Bijlmer neighbourhood with the tradition of one of the most successful clubs in the history of European football.

Fan culture

Ajax supporters are known for their football intelligence and vocal commitment. The south stand, known as Zuid, is the epicentre of organised support -- flags, drums, and choreographed displays are a regular feature. Ajax has a deep local fanbase in Amsterdam combined with a large global following, meaning European nights draw supporters from across the world. The red-and-white colour scheme dominates the stands, and the club anthem rings out before every home fixture. Supporters are particularly associated with high expectations of attacking, technical football -- a legacy of totaalvoetbal that shapes the culture to this day.

Big matches

The defining moments of the arena's modern era came during the 2018-19 Champions League campaign: Ajax eliminated Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu and then Juventus at Juventus Stadium, with the return legs at the Johan Cruijff ArenA generating electric atmospheres. The stadium also hosted group-stage matches at UEFA EURO 2020 in front of an international audience. Each major European night turns the arena into a cauldron of red and white, with the closed roof containing the noise and amplifying the intensity beyond what the open configuration can achieve.
