Přehled

O stadionu

Arena Lviv is a football stadium in Lviv (historically also known as Lvov), western Ukraine, opened in 2011 and built specifically for UEFA Euro 2012. Designed by Viennese architect Albert Wimmer, the fully covered arena seats 34,915 spectators to UEFA Category 4 standard. It served as the home ground of FC Karpaty Lviv, one of the oldest football clubs in Ukraine.

Location and surroundings

The stadium is situated in the Sykhiv district on the south-eastern outskirts of Lviv, approximately 8 km from the UNESCO-listed historic city centre. The area is predominantly residential and is served by tram and bus connections. Lviv itself is a major cultural and commercial centre close to the Polish border, with a distinctly Central European character shaped by centuries of Austro-Hungarian, Polish and Ukrainian heritage.

Current use

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Lviv has become one of the country's principal centres for internally displaced persons and international humanitarian aid. The stadium has at various times been repurposed for non-commercial purposes related to the wartime situation. Competitive football has continued in Lviv; the arena periodically hosts matches for FC Shakhtar Donetsk and other clubs displaced from their home grounds by the conflict.

Origins and construction for Euro 2012

Ukraine and Poland were jointly awarded the hosting rights to UEFA Euro 2012 in 2007. Ukraine designated four host cities: Kyiv, Kharkiv, Donetsk and Lviv. As Lviv had no modern stadium meeting UEFA's requirements, a new venue had to be built from scratch. The project was awarded to Vienna-based specialist Albert Wimmer, who designed a compact, fully covered arena with a distinctive latticed exterior.

Construction, which began around 2008, was plagued by funding disputes, site controversies and repeated delays that at times threatened Lviv's place on the tournament roster. The stadium was eventually completed and officially opened in 2011, roughly a year before the tournament kicked off.

UEFA Euro 2012

During UEFA Euro 2012, Arena Lviv hosted three group-stage matches from Groups B and D. The fixtures brought the national teams of France, England, Sweden and Ukraine to Lviv -- Ukraine's own opening match of the tournament was played here. Combined attendance across the three matches exceeded 100,000 spectators. For Lviv, the tournament represented a major international showcase and drove significant investment in the city's infrastructure and tourism offer.

The war and post-2022 reality

After the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022, Ukrainian football was suspended and later resumed in a restricted format. Lviv, situated far from the front lines in western Ukraine, became a temporary base for several displaced clubs. Arena Lviv has been among the functional venues hosting Shakhtar Donetsk home matches, keeping professional football alive in Ukraine despite the circumstances.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

Lviv's football identity and FC Karpaty

The atmosphere at Arena Lviv is rooted in Lviv's strong local football identity. FC Karpaty Lviv, the city's most storied club, holds the distinction of being the only side outside Moscow and Kyiv to win the Soviet Cup, which they claimed in 1969. Karpaty supporters brought decades of supporter tradition to the new stadium when it opened, and ultras groups maintained an active terrace culture even through years of financial difficulty that eventually led to the club's restructuring.

Euro 2012 and international visitors

The three UEFA Euro 2012 group-stage matches brought Arena Lviv to international attention. Supporters from France, England and Scandinavia filled both the stadium and the cobbled streets of Lviv's old town. The city's celebrated cafe culture, Central European architecture and comparatively low prices made a lasting impression on visiting supporters, and Lviv's reputation as an exceptionally hospitable host city has endured in travel communities ever since.

Football under wartime conditions

From 2022 onwards, the presence of displaced clubs at Arena Lviv has carried a particular emotional weight. Shakhtar Donetsk matches in Lviv -- far from the destroyed Donbas Arena -- are deeply charged occasions for players, staff and supporters who have lost their city to war. The stadium has become one of the spaces where Ukrainians hold on to football as a form of collective normality in extraordinary times.

Getting to the stadium

Arena Lviv is located in the Sykhiv district in the eastern part of the city. From the historic city centre:

  • Tram: Lines 1 and 3 serve stops near the stadium; the journey from the centre takes approximately 20--30 minutes.
  • Bus: Several city bus routes connect the centre with Sykhiv; check current routes via the official Lviv transport sources or a local navigation app.
  • Taxi / rideshare: Uber and Bolt operate in Lviv; a ride from the centre takes 15--25 minutes depending on traffic.

Current situation and safety

Lviv is located in western Ukraine, well away from active front lines. The city operates relatively normally under martial law, though air-raid alerts do occur. Visitors should consult up-to-date travel advisories from their national foreign ministry before travelling and familiarise themselves with the nearest shelter locations. The situation can change, so checking current guidance immediately before any visit is essential.

Tickets and fixtures

Tickets for matches played at Arena Lviv are available through the websites of the relevant clubs -- for Shakhtar Donetsk fixtures at shakhtar.com, and for other competitions via the Ukrainian Premier League portal. The stadium capacity is 34,915 and major fixtures often sell out. Always verify the current match schedule directly with the host club, as fixture assignments in wartime Ukrainian football remain subject to change.
