O stadionu

Al-Salam Stadium (Arabic: ملعب السلام) is a football stadium located in the Nasr City district on the north-eastern edge of Cairo, Egypt, inaugurated in 2009. With a capacity of approximately 30,000 seats, it serves as the home ground of two Cairo-based clubs -- the globally celebrated Al Ahly SC and the industrially affiliated El-Entag El-Harby. The name translates from Arabic as 'the peace stadium'.

Location and surroundings

The stadium sits in the Nasr City district, one of Cairo's largest and most densely populated modern suburbs, situated roughly 15--20 km north-east of the historic city centre. The surrounding area is characterised by residential high-rises, broad commercial avenues and retail centres typical of this planned mid-20th-century district. The proximity to Cairo's main arterial roads gives the ground good access from across the metropolitan area.

Main uses

The stadium principally hosts home fixtures of Al Ahly SC in the Egyptian Premier League, the country's top-flight division. Al Ahly is the most decorated club in African football history, holding a record number of CAF Champions League titles. Alongside league matches, the ground stages cup-competition ties and occasional international friendlies. El-Entag El-Harby -- a club associated with Egypt's industrial sector -- also uses the stadium as their home venue.

Historie

Cesta časem

Al-Salam Stadium was built as part of the Egyptian government's broader effort to modernise Cairo's sports infrastructure in the early 21st century. Construction took place between approximately 2006 and 2009, and the ground opened in 2009, providing the football clubs of Nasr City with a modern arena close to their support base in one of the capital's most populous districts.

Construction and opening

The stadium was conceived to offer an alternative to Cairo's older and capacity-strained venues, most notably the Cairo International Stadium. Built by Egyptian contractors under state auspices, the design meets CAF (Confederation of African Football) standards for continental competition hosting. The opening in 2009 allowed Al Ahly to stage home games closer to the club's Nasr City base and its enormous Cairo fanbase.

Major renovations

Since its inauguration the stadium has undergone incremental technical improvements, including lighting upgrades and enhanced player and media facilities. Egypt's hosting of AFCON 2019 raised infrastructure standards across Egyptian football venues, and while Al-Salam was not one of the primary host grounds, the broader modernisation drive benefited the entire national football ecosystem. Further infrastructure investment is anticipated as Egypt continues to position itself as a leading continental host nation.

Notable moments

The most significant chapters in Al-Salam Stadium's history are inseparable from the domestic achievements of Al Ahly SC -- Africa's most successful club with a record ten-plus CAF Champions League titles. Egyptian Premier League title celebrations and domestic cup victories on this pitch represent the ground's most memorable occasions. Al Ahly's participation in CAF continental competitions has repeatedly drawn continental attention to the stadium and reinforced the club's standing as the undisputed giant of African club football.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

The atmosphere at Al-Salam Stadium is defined by the passionate supporter culture of Al Ahly SC, a club whose fanbase is among the largest and most vocal on the African continent. Red and white colours flood the terraces for every home fixture, and the noise levels match the intensity typical of Egyptian football at its most fervent.

Fan culture

Al Ahly's principal ultras group, the Ultras Ahlawy, is one of the most famous and well-organised supporter movements in Africa and the Arab world. At home matches they orchestrate large-scale tifo displays, coordinated chants and drumming sessions that transform the stadium into a cauldron of sound. Al Ahly claim tens of millions of supporters across Egypt and the wider Arab-speaking world. The rivalry with Zamalek SC -- Cairo's other superclub -- is one of the most intense club rivalries on earth, and fixtures between the two sides are among the most watched matches in Africa.

Big matches

Al Ahly's home league fixtures at Al-Salam Stadium have repeatedly produced some of the Egyptian Premier League's most compelling football. CAF Champions League ties attract fans from across the continent and underline the exceptional status of the club. The Cairo Derby against Zamalek SC -- sometimes called the African El Classico -- generates an electric atmosphere charged with passion and rivalry that extends well beyond sport, reflecting the deeper cultural and social dimensions of Egyptian public life.

Praktické info

Návštěva stadionu

Al-Salam Stadium is located in the Nasr City district of north-eastern Cairo, approximately 15--20 km from the city's historic centre. Cairo is the largest city in Africa and the Arab world, served by an extensive if heavily congested transport network.

How to get there

  • Metro: Cairo Metro Line 2 serves Nasr City; the closest stations are Nasser and Abbaseya, from which the stadium is reachable by taxi or on foot in approximately 10--15 minutes.
  • Taxi / rideshare: White metered taxis or the Uber/Careem apps are the most convenient option; journeys from the city centre take 20--40 minutes depending on Cairo's characteristically heavy traffic.
  • Microbus: Local minibuses connect Nasr City with the rest of Cairo, but navigating them without Arabic can be challenging for visitors.
  • Matchday: Allow significantly extra time on match days due to road closures and large crowds converging on the area.

Tickets and tours

Tickets for Al Ahly SC matches are available at the stadium box office or via Egyptian online ticketing platforms. For CAF continental fixtures, tickets are sold through Al Ahly's official channels or the relevant confederation. Public stadium tours are not regularly scheduled -- contact Al Ahly's administration directly for access outside of matchdays.

Visitor tips

  • When to arrive? Plan to be at the ground 45--60 minutes before kick-off -- Cairo traffic is unpredictable and entrance queues can be long.
  • What to wear? Summer temperatures in Cairo regularly exceed 35 °C; lightweight cotton clothing, sunglasses and a hat are strongly recommended. For winter evening fixtures (December--February) a light jacket is advisable.
  • Security: Expect thorough bag checks at entry -- leave large backpacks at your accommodation.
  • Local food: Street food around the stadium offers Egyptian staples -- koshari (lentils, pasta and tomato sauce), falafel and grilled meat dishes are all available at very affordable prices.
