Přehled
O stadionu
Yankee Stadium is a multi-purpose sports venue in the Bronx, New York City, opened in 2009 as the home of Major League Baseball's New York Yankees. Seating capacity reaches 46,537 for baseball and is reduced to approximately 28,000 for football matches. The stadium was designed by Populous and is operated by the New York Yankees organisation. Since 2015 it has served as the temporary home ground of New York City FC (MLS).
Location and surroundings
The stadium stands at 1 East 161st Street in the Concourse neighbourhood of the Bronx, directly opposite the site of the original Yankee Stadium (1923-2009). The surrounding area is densely urban, characterised by apartment buildings, local businesses and restaurants typical of the South Bronx. From Midtown Manhattan the stadium is reachable by subway in approximately 20 minutes, making it one of the best-connected major sports venues in the United States.
Main uses
The stadium functions primarily as the home of the New York Yankees (MLB, April-October). New York City FC has played its MLS home matches here since 2015, with the field reconfigured for each football fixture to meet FIFA pitch dimensions. The venue has also hosted US national team matches, CONCACAF Gold Cup games in 2015 and 2019, a high-profile Real Madrid friendly in 2016, and occasional concerts and boxing events.
Historie
Cesta časem
Yankee Stadium opened on 16 April 2009, replacing the legendary original Yankee Stadium that had stood since 1923 and was among the most celebrated sports arenas in American history. Construction began in 2006 at a cost of approximately $1.5 billion, delivering a modern ballpark that paid deliberate architectural homage to its predecessor.
Construction and opening
Architecture firm Populous (then HOK Sport) designed the new stadium to echo the iconic visual identity of the original, recreating the signature frieze that circles the upper facade and using granite cladding and stainless steel to evoke the aesthetic of baseball's historic era. The new building sits directly across 161st Street from where the original once stood. Internally the stadium features premium suites, the New York Yankees Museum, and extensive food-and-beverage operations across multiple levels.
NYCFC arrives (2015)
New York City FC was admitted to MLS in 2013 as an expansion club jointly owned by Manchester City FC and the New York Yankees. The club began competition in the 2015 season with Yankee Stadium as its temporary home while a purpose-built football stadium in New York City is pursued. Despite the baseball-first design, pitch adaptations have allowed NYCFC to play competitive MLS football at the heart of New York for over a decade.
Notable moments
In August 2016 the stadium hosted a high-profile friendly between Real Madrid and AS Roma that drew more than 45,000 spectators. CONCACAF Gold Cup group-stage matches were played here in 2015 and 2019. On the baseball side, the stadium's defining moment came in 2009 when the Yankees clinched the World Series on home soil, winning their 27th championship in just the stadium's first season.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
Yankee Stadium carries the weight of one of the most storied names in world sport, and stepping inside for any event recalls a century of New York sporting history. For NYCFC matches the venue takes on a different but genuine character, shaped by the club's growing fanbase and the energy of the Bronx neighbourhood.
Fan culture
New York City FC has built a passionate supporter culture since its founding in 2013. The Third Rail -- the club's primary supporters' group -- occupies an end section behind the goal and delivers a continental-style atmosphere of drums, chants and flags that stands apart from traditional American sports entertainment. Fans embrace the club's sky-blue identity, its connection to the Manchester City Group, and the distinctly New York character of its South Bronx setting. The neighbourhood's energy permeates matchdays in a way that a suburban stadium simply cannot replicate.
Big matches
MLS Eastern Conference play-off fixtures at Yankee Stadium represent the atmosphere at its highest, with the Third Rail producing tifo displays and sustained vocal support throughout. The 2016 Real Madrid vs. AS Roma friendly transformed the stadium into a classic European-style football evening, with a crowd of over 45,000 that dwarfs any regular NYCFC league attendance. CONCACAF Gold Cup matches in 2019 brought international football crowds to the Bronx and demonstrated the stadium's capacity to deliver an authentic major-tournament atmosphere. For dedicated NYCFC supporters each home fixture at Yankee Stadium remains meaningful as part of the club's journey towards a permanent home.
Praktické info
Návštěva stadionu
Yankee Stadium is among the most accessible major sports venues in the United States, served directly by New York City's subway network from across the five boroughs and beyond.
How to get there
- Subway: Lines B and D (station 161st Street -- Yankee Stadium) and Line 4 (station 161st Street -- Yankee Stadium) stop at the stadium's gates; journey from Midtown Manhattan takes approximately 20 minutes
- Metro-North Railroad: Hudson Line, station Yankees-E 153rd St -- practical for visitors arriving from northern suburbs
- Car: Interstate 87 (Major Deegan Expressway), exits 5 or 6; paid parking is available nearby but fills quickly and is expensive on event days
- On foot or by bike: The stadium is embedded in the Bronx street grid; Citi Bike docks are located nearby
Tickets and tours
NYCFC match tickets are sold through the official club website and secondary-market platforms. Regular-season MLS fixtures are generally available; play-off matches sell out faster. Stadium tours are offered on non-event days, covering the dugout, clubhouse and the New York Yankees Museum -- of particular interest for baseball fans.
Visitor tips
- When to arrive: At least 45 minutes before kick-off; entry queues can be long on busy event days
- Food and drink: Wide concourse food options inside the stadium; the surrounding Bronx neighbourhood offers excellent Hispanic and Caribbean cuisine within walking distance
- Weather: Summer MLS matches can be hot in the partially open stadium; spring and autumn fixtures are considerably more comfortable
- Pitch configuration: For football matches the field is installed over the baseball surface -- corner flags sit closer to the stands than at a purpose-built football ground, creating an intimate feel despite the baseball-oriented bowl
