Přehled

O stadionu

Stanford Stadium is an outdoor college football stadium located on the campus of Stanford University in Stanford, California, in the heart of the Bay Area. Following a full reconstruction completed in 2006, the stadium holds 50,424 spectators and serves as the home of the Stanford Cardinal football team. The stadium also hosts the university's annual commencement ceremony.

Location and surroundings

The stadium sits on Stanford's sprawling campus roughly 50 km south-east of San Francisco and 30 km north-west of San José, within the city of Palo Alto. The surrounding campus is lush and architecturally distinguished, adjacent to Maples Pavilion and other athletic facilities. The nearest rail connection is Palo Alto station on the Caltrain commuter line, approximately 3 km away. By road the stadium is accessible via US-101 (Embarcadero Road exit) or I-280.

Main uses

The primary tenant is the Stanford Cardinal Football program competing in NCAA Division I (ACC conference). The stadium has hosted major one-off events throughout its history: six matches of the 1994 FIFA World Cup, Super Bowl XIX in January 1985 (played in the original stadium), and American football competitions at the 1984 Summer Olympics. These events make Stanford Stadium one of a small group of venues worldwide that has hosted both a FIFA World Cup and a Super Bowl.

Historie

Cesta časem

Stanford Stadium was first opened in 1921 as an earthen horseshoe with wooden bleacher seating on a steel frame. Its original capacity of 60,000 expanded to approximately 89,000 by 1927 through successive earth-fill additions, briefly making it one of the largest sporting venues in the United States.

Construction and opening

The original bowl was built using a simple earthen fill technique common to early American college stadiums and served the university for more than eight decades. Despite its modest construction, the sheer scale of the venue made it an attractive choice for national and international mega-events from the 1980s onward.

Major renovations

The entire original structure was demolished and replaced between 2005 and 2006. The new facility was designed by HNTB Architecture at a cost of approximately 90 million USD. The deliberate reduction in capacity from roughly 85,500 to 50,424 reflected a shift toward financial sustainability for regular NCAA games. The rebuilt stadium opened in September 2006 with modern hospitality, improved sightlines and full ADA accessibility.

Notable moments

The old stadium hosted Super Bowl XIX on 20 January 1985, when the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Miami Dolphins 38-16 in front of 84,059 spectators. For international football fans, the defining chapter is the 1994 FIFA World Cup: Stanford Stadium staged six matches, including the Group A encounter between Brazil and Sweden (1-1) and the Round of 16 tie between Brazil and the United States (1-0). That US victory remains one of the most celebrated moments in American soccer history. Total World Cup attendance at Stanford Stadium exceeded 350,000 spectators. The venue also hosted the football tournament at the 1984 Summer Olympics.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

The atmosphere at Stanford Stadium is shaped by the traditions of elite American college football, where fan loyalty is intertwined with one of the world's most prestigious academic institutions.

Fan culture

Support at Stanford is drawn primarily from students, faculty, alumni and Silicon Valley professionals. The most intense fixture of the calendar is the annual 'Big Game' against the California Golden Bears (UC Berkeley), a rivalry played continuously since 1892 and one of the oldest in American college football. A defining element of game-day is the Stanford Band (LSJUMB -- Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band), an unconventional, satirical ensemble famous for irreverent half-time shows that regularly provoke and delight in equal measure. The rebuilt stadium delivers excellent sightlines and modern comfort without sacrificing the intimate feel the reduced capacity provides.

Big matches

For European football supporters, Stanford Stadium carries its greatest significance as a 1994 FIFA World Cup venue. The stadium hosted six matches in the tournament, including the memorable clash between Brazil and Sweden (1-1) in Group A, where stars Romário and Bebeto showcased the attacking brilliance that would carry Brazil to the world title. The Round of 16 game Brazil 1-0 USA drew huge crowds and represented a landmark moment for American soccer, as the hosts reached the knockout stage on home soil before falling to the eventual champions. Over 350,000 spectators attended World Cup matches at this venue. The stadium's history also includes Super Bowl XIX in 1985, cementing its status as one of the most versatile major-event venues in the United States.
