Přehled

O stadionu

Stadio Ettore Giardiniero, widely known as Stadio Via del Mare, is a multi-purpose football stadium in the southern Italian city of Lecce, in the Apulia region. It was inaugurated on 11 September 1966 with a friendly between US Lecce and FC Spartak Moscow, and at its peak held 40,670 seats. The stadium is the home ground of US Lecce and carries the formal name of Ettore Giardiniero, the mayor of Lecce who oversaw the first major renovation in 1985.

Location and surroundings

The stadium stands on the southern edge of Lecce city centre, in the district named after the Via del Mare -- the main road leading towards the Adriatic Sea roughly 15 km away. Lecce is nicknamed the 'Florence of the South' for its extraordinary baroque architecture in local white limestone. The ground is embedded in a residential neighbourhood and is easily walkable from the historic city centre.

Main uses

The stadium serves exclusively as the home of US Lecce for Serie A and Serie B fixtures depending on the club's division. US Lecce is the only top-flight club in the entire Apulia region, making Via del Mare the most significant football arena in the area.

Historie

Cesta časem

The history of Stadio Via del Mare is inseparable from the story of US Lecce and the fortunes of football in Apulia.

Construction and opening

The stadium was inaugurated on 11 September 1966 with a friendly between US Lecce and FC Spartak Moscow. The construction reflected the broader mid-1960s investment by Italian provincial authorities in local sporting infrastructure. The name Via del Mare derives from the adjacent boulevard leading towards the sea -- a straightforward topographic reference that has remained the popular identity of the ground.

Major renovations

The most significant renovation was carried out in 1985 under the mayoralty of Ettore Giardiniero, after whom the stadium is formally named. Capacity was expanded over successive phases to reach a maximum of 40,670 seats. Further upgrades followed US Lecce's various promotions to Serie A to meet league standards. Current operating capacity stands at 31,533 seats in the covered bowl configuration.

Notable moments

The stadium's most celebrated moments are tied to US Lecce's sustained spells in Serie A, notably the period around 2000-2005 when the club spent several consecutive seasons at the top level. Via del Mare hosted pivotal Serie A fixtures against the biggest Italian clubs including Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan. Every return by Lecce to Serie A transforms Via del Mare once again into the focal point of Apulian football pride.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

The atmosphere at Via del Mare reflects the pride of southern Italian football culture and the devotion of US Lecce supporters to their region's sole top-division club.

Fan culture

US Lecce is the heartbeat of regional identity in Apulia. The supporters -- known collectively as Giallorossi (Yellow-Reds) after the club's colours -- are regarded as one of the most loyal fan bases in southern Italian football. Southern Italian football passion -- expressed through loud chanting, song, and carefully organised terrace choreography -- is fully on display at Via del Mare for every league fixture. The most active supporter groups are concentrated on the Curva Nord and Curva Sud end stands.

Big matches

The most memorable occasions at Via del Mare have come with home Serie A fixtures against Italy's major clubs. Matches against Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan have filled the ground to its operating capacity and produced the most intense atmospheres in the stadium's history. Every relegation battle or key survival match in Serie A delivers the full intensity of southern Italian football to the Via del Mare.
