Přehled
O stadionu
Gewiss Stadium, officially known as the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia, is a football ground in Bergamo, northern Italy, and the home of Atalanta BC. Its post-renovation capacity is 23,439 seats. The stadium has served Atalanta on this site since 1928 and has been owned outright by the club since 2017, when Atalanta purchased it from the municipality of Bergamo. The commercial name Gewiss Stadium has been in use since 2019.
Location and surroundings
The stadium stands in the Malpensata district in the southern part of Bergamo, roughly 2 km from the historic hilltop city Città Alta. The immediate surroundings are dense urban fabric — residential blocks and light industry typical of northern Italian suburbs. The southern Alps form a visible backdrop on clear days. The venue is well served by city buses and is accessible from both Bergamo railway station and the nearby Orio al Serio airport.
Main uses
The ground serves exclusively as the home of Atalanta BC for Serie A and UEFA competition. In 2023/24 Atalanta won the UEFA Europa League under manager Gian Piero Gasperini, the greatest achievement in the club's history. In UEFA competitions the venue is listed under the name Stadio di Bergamo.
Historie
Cesta časem
The stadium's century-long history mirrors Atalanta's rise from a provincial club to one of Italian and European football's most admired sides.
Construction and early years
The ground was established in 1928 under the name Stadio Mario Brumana, honouring a local athletic official. During the mid-twentieth century it was progressively expanded and was redesignated Stadio Comunale. In 1988 the stadium received its formal long-standing name Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia — a tribute to Italian athletes who had celebrated an Olympic gold medal in Bergamo in 1984.
Privatisation and major renovation
The pivotal moment in the ground's modern history came in 2017, when Atalanta purchased the stadium from the Bergamo municipality, becoming one of the few Italian clubs to own their ground outright. This unlocked an ambitious phased redevelopment. From 2019 onwards all four stands have been progressively demolished and rebuilt as modern covered tiers with improved sightlines and seating comfort. The work has been carried out in stages with the stadium remaining operational throughout. Simultaneously, a naming-rights agreement was reached with Bergamo-based electrical components manufacturer Gewiss, giving the ground its current commercial name.
Notable moments
Atalanta's run to the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League quarter-final brought the club — and Bergamo — unprecedented European attention. Their 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final in Dublin in May 2024 was the crowning moment: the club's first major European trophy in 116 years of history, achieved under Gasperini's distinctive attacking system.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
Gewiss Stadium generates one of the most intense atmospheres in Italian football. Its compact renovated bowl, passionate supporters and Atalanta's remarkable decade of success combine to produce a matchday experience that stands out in Serie A.
Fan culture
Atalanta BC's supporters are known throughout Italian football for their authenticity and fidelity. The club's ultras, centred on the Curva Pisani (north end), produce sustained noise, coordinated choreography and incessant chanting that rarely lets up across ninety minutes. Atalanta represents industrial Bergamo and its surrounding Bergamasca valley with fierce local pride; the fan culture is deeply regional rather than global. The ground's relatively modest capacity means every seat feels close to the pitch.
Big matches
The 2019/20 Champions League campaign made Bergamo a European talking point — the quarter-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain (1:3) ended a fairy-tale run but confirmed that Atalanta could compete at the highest level. The 2024 Europa League final in Dublin then delivered a 3:0 win over Bayer Leverkusen, prompting celebrations across Bergamo that lasted through the night. Every European fixture at Gewiss Stadium is now attended with the expectation that this club can beat anyone, an atmosphere shift that has fundamentally changed the matchday experience.
