Přehled

O stadionu

Stade Abdoulaye Wade is Senegal's largest and most modern football stadium, officially inaugurated in 2022 in the purpose-built city of Diamniadio roughly 30 km south-east of Dakar. With a capacity of 50,000 seats, it ranks among the five largest stadiums in sub-Saharan Africa. The arena features air-conditioned concourses, LED floodlighting that meets both CAF and FIFA standards, and a full roof covering every seat -- an unprecedented standard for West-Central Africa. The stadium is named after Abdoulaye Wade, Senegal's third president (2000--2012), during whose tenure major reforms in Senegalese football were initiated.

Location in Diamniadio

Diamniadio is an ambitious 'smart city' built from scratch away from historic, traffic-clogged Dakar -- a planned hub housing new government ministries, an African Union conference centre and industrial zones. Stade Abdoulaye Wade stands at the heart of a sports complex that also includes an athletics track, training pitches and an indoor arena. The Dakar--Diamniadio expressway and the new Train Express Regional (TER) light-rail link the venue to central Dakar in approximately 35 minutes. Removed from the congested city centre, the stadium offers ample parking and more relaxed access than its predecessor.

Main uses

The stadium is the primary home of the Senegal national football team -- 'Les Lions de la Teranga' -- who won their first AFCON title in 2022. It also hosts Ligue 1 Sénégal fixtures, international athletics events and major commercial events. The venue is managed by Senegal's Ministry of Sport in coordination with CAF.

Historie

Cesta časem

The idea of building a new national stadium gathered momentum as debate over the aging Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor (capacity 60,000, opened 1985) intensified. Senegal's bid to host AFCON 2019 was rejected partly due to infrastructure concerns -- that rejection proved the decisive catalyst. Construction of a new national stadium in Diamniadio was approved in 2018 as part of the broader 'Projet Ville de Diamniadio' urban development programme.

Construction and opening

The main contractor was China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), engaged under a bilateral agreement between Senegal and China. The project took approximately four years to complete. The stadium was formally inaugurated on 22 October 2022 in the presence of President Macky Sall. Total project costs were estimated at more than USD 200 million. Originally designed under the working title 'Stade du Sénégal', the name was changed to honour former president Abdoulaye Wade before the inauguration ceremony.

Key post-opening moments

Among the first major fixtures was a 2023 AFCON qualifying match -- stands filled to capacity and confirmed that Dakar fans embraced the new venue faster than many anticipated. In 2024 the arena hosted matches during the CHAN (African Nations Championship) and was confirmed as CAF's primary venue in Senegal. Beyond football, the stadium has served as the setting for state ceremonies, national celebrations and cultural events.

Architecture

The stadium takes the form of an oval bowl with a full roof structure covering all seats. The facade combines white cladding with accents in the colours of the Senegalese flag (green, yellow, red). The pitch uses a natural hybrid surface with subsurface irrigation. Player and media facilities comply with FIFA Category A standards.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

Senegalese football has lived through an extraordinary era since 2022 -- the AFCON title and consecutive World Cup appearances (2002, 2022) have ignited a generational passion that manifests at Stade Abdoulaye Wade through a unique blend of drumming, singing and dance. 'Les Lions' are national icons; supporting them is not merely sport but a collective celebration of Senegalese identity.

Fan culture

Senegalese supporter culture is rooted in the traditions of sabar drumming, rhythmic clapping and spontaneous dancing. The stands mix organised supporter groups with families and children -- unlike some European ultra cultures, the atmosphere is familial yet no less intense. Gold and green dominate the terraces as oversized drums pound out rhythms familiar from Dakar's street festivals. Fans travel from across the country -- from Thiès, Saint-Louis and Ziguinchor -- giving matches the feel of a national gathering rather than a local event.

Big matches

The first generation of memories were written by the AFCON champion Lions during qualifying campaigns and friendlies after their triumph at AFCON 2021 (played in Cameroon, January 2022). Players such as Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly and Édouard Mendy are revered as heroes -- their presence virtually guarantees a sell-out crowd. High-stakes African derbies against Egypt or Morocco have produced some of the most ferocious atmospheres Diamniadio has seen, with the stands shaking to rhythms audible across the entire new city.

Praktické info

Návštěva stadionu

Stade Abdoulaye Wade is located in Diamniadio, the new planned city approximately 30 km from historic central Dakar. Accessibility improved dramatically with the launch of the TER (Train Express Regional) light rail, which connects Dakar Plateau with Diamniadio in around 35 minutes and remains the most comfortable option for most visitors.

How to get there

  • TER (train): Departs from Dakar Plateau station (stopping at Yoff and Dakar Airport) to Diamniadio; journey time approximately 35 minutes, fare around 1,500 XOF (approximately EUR 2.50). Extra services run on matchdays.
  • Taxi / VTC: Traditional green 'taxi clando' or the Yango ride-hailing app (widely used in Dakar); journey takes 45--60 minutes outside rush hour, costs roughly 4,000--6,000 XOF (EUR 6--10).
  • Car: The A1 expressway leads directly to Diamniadio; parking at the stadium is spacious and free of charge.
  • Bus: The Dakar Dem Dikk (DDD) network operates services on the Dakar--Diamniadio corridor.

Tickets

National team fixtures and major events are managed through the FSF (Fédération Sénégalaise de Football). Tickets are sold at the stadium box office and online via the FSF website. For domestic Ligue 1 Sénégal matches tickets are available on matchday; prices start from approximately 1,000 XOF (around EUR 1.50). National team games typically cost 2,000--5,000 XOF (EUR 3--8) depending on the stand category.

Visitor tips

  • Climate: Dakar has a subtropical climate. Matches held during the day between October and April are comfortable; summer heat (June--August) can be intense -- choose shaded seats under the roof and carry ample water.
  • Local food: The area around Diamniadio is still developing; best pre-match dining options are found in central Dakar or the airport zone. Stadium-area stalls serve thiéboudienne (fish and rice -- the national dish), grilled meat and fresh coconut.
  • Safety: Diamniadio is a modern planned city with good infrastructure -- the risks typical of central Dakar are considerably lower here. Carry small change and keep valuables secure.
  • Accommodation: Hotels in Diamniadio remain limited; most visitors stay in Dakar (Almadies, Plateau or Mermoz districts) and travel in by TER or taxi.
