Přehled

O stadionu

St. Jakob-Park is a football stadium in Basel, Switzerland, and the largest football venue in the country. It is the home ground of FC Basel, one of Switzerland's most successful clubs. The stadium was opened in 2001 and designed by the Basel-based architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. Its seating capacity is 38,512 for Swiss Super League matches and 37,500 for international fixtures. Locals affectionately call it Joggeli.

Location and surroundings

The stadium occupies the southeastern edge of Basel in the St. Johann district, close to the German border. The complex sits alongside a shopping centre and hotel that form part of an integrated urban development project. Tram connections from the city centre take approximately 10 minutes. The surroundings are modern and well-served, with retail outlets and restaurants directly adjacent to the ground.

Main uses

St. Jakob-Park is the primary home of FC Basel for Swiss Super League fixtures and European competitions. In 2008 it served as one of the host venues for UEFA Euro 2008, co-hosted by Switzerland and Austria. With a maximum capacity of up to 60,000 for concerts, the stadium also hosts large-scale music events and commercial gatherings.

Historie

Cesta časem

The stadium's origins lie at the turn of the millennium, when the city of Basel decided to replace the ageing original Stadion St. Jakob, built in 1954, with a modern multipurpose arena.

Construction and opening

The project was entrusted to the Basel-based firm Herzog & de Meuron, at the time still establishing itself on the global stage. Construction ran from 1999 to 2001 and the stadium was officially opened in 2001. The architects designed a compact, fully enclosed four-stand bowl with a glass facade that sets it visually apart from conventional concrete arenas. A shopping mall and hotel were integrated into the complex from the outset, helping to offset running costs.

Major renovations and Euro 2008

The original capacity of 33,433 seats was increased to 42,500 ahead of UEFA Euro 2008. Following the tournament, a number of seats were removed to create more space between places, settling the capacity at 38,512 for league matches. The stadium passed UEFA's stringent requirements and was awarded a four-star rating out of five by the association.

Notable moments

Euro 2008 brought four group-stage matches to Basel, including fixtures involving the host nation Switzerland. FC Basel has written some of their most memorable European stories at this ground, chief among them the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League group stage when they defeated Manchester United 2-1 and became the first Swiss club to advance from a UCL group.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

St. Jakob-Park generates a formidable atmosphere when full, enhanced by the compact enclosed bowl design and the roofed stands that trap crowd noise inside.

Fan culture

FC Basel boasts the largest and loudest supporter base in Switzerland. The Nordkurve (north end) is the epicentre of active support -- flags, coordinated chanting, and organised displays are a fixture at every home game. The club's supporters take immense pride in the record run of eight consecutive Swiss Super League titles (2009-2017). Basel's international character as Switzerland's third-largest city adds diversity to the stands, attracting visitors from across the Rhine region.

Big matches

Euro 2008 brought fans from across Europe to Joggeli and gave the venue genuine international exposure. The club's finest recent hour came in the 2011/12 Champions League group stage, when FC Basel defeated Manchester United 2-1 at home, completing a double over the English giants and progressing as group winners. Such evenings turn St. Jakob-Park into one of the most intense atmospheres in Swiss football, with the compact bowl amplifying every moment of drama.
