Overview
About the stadium
SoFi Stadium is an indoor multi-purpose stadium in Inglewood, California, a suburb within Greater Los Angeles. It opened in September 2020 and holds 70,240 spectators. It is the shared home of the National Football League's Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers.
Location and surroundings
The stadium occupies the former site of the Hollywood Park Racetrack and neighbors the Kia Forum and the Intuit Dome. It anchors the wider Hollywood Park district — a mixed-use neighborhood combining offices, residences, retail, a luxury hotel, and an artificial lake. Above it stretches an independently supported translucent canopy made of ETFE panels, which lets in sunlight and helps regulate the interior climate while the bowl's open sides preserve an outdoor feel.
Main uses
Beyond hosting both NFL tenants, the stadium stages the biggest events in sport and entertainment. It held Super Bowl LVI in 2022, the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship, WrestleMania 39, and the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup final. For major occasions its capacity can expand beyond 100,000. Attached beneath the canopy is the YouTube Theater, a 6,000-seat music and theatre venue.
History
Journey through time
The story of SoFi Stadium began with the plan to build an entirely new arena on the old Hollywood Park racetrack to bring the Rams back to Los Angeles. The result became the most expensive stadium of its era.
Construction and opening
Construction ran from 2016 to 2020 to a design by the architects HKS. The racecourse, which had closed for racing in 2013, gave way to an ambitious project encompassing the stadium itself, a pedestrian plaza, and a performance venue. The official opening came on September 8, 2020, with the first NFL game on September 13, when the Rams beat the Dallas Cowboys 20–17. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, that inaugural season was played behind closed doors.
Major renovations
Thanks to its forward-looking design, the stadium has so far needed no major rebuild. Instead it reconfigures for different roles — for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, field-level seats will be removed and the artificial turf replaced with natural grass. For the 2028 Summer Olympics, a pool for swimming events will be built over the field.
Notable moments
The most memorable night was Super Bowl LVI in February 2022, when the Rams won 23–20 over the Cincinnati Bengals in their own home stadium. In 2023 the venue hosted the NCAA national championship, WrestleMania 39, and the CONCACAF Gold Cup final. The record crowd of 81,384 came for an Ed Sheeran concert in September 2023.
Atmosphere
Matchday
The atmosphere at SoFi Stadium comes from blending cutting-edge technology with an open Californian setting. The venue in Inglewood can feel both intimate and overwhelming, depending on whether it is staging an ordinary game or a marquee event.
Fan culture
Because two NFL teams share the building — the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers — its colors shift depending on who is playing. The centerpiece is the vast double-sided video board called the Infinity Screen by Samsung, formerly the Oculus — suspended over the field, it weighs over a thousand tonnes, displays 80 million pixels, and houses a 260-speaker sound system. The translucent roof, fitted with 27,000 LED pucks, can project images visible even from planes landing at nearby LAX.
Big matches
The stadium's most thrilling moment came at Super Bowl LVI, when the home Rams lifted the title in front of their own fans. A festival of soccer arrives with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when the venue will stage eight matches — five group-stage games, two Round of 32 ties, and a quarterfinal. Super Bowl LXI returns in 2027, and a year later the stadium will host the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
Practical info
Visiting the stadium
Visiting SoFi Stadium takes some planning — the complex in Inglewood sits within the sprawling Los Angeles area, so getting there is worth sorting out in advance.
How to get there
The easiest option is the SoFi Shuttle, a free bus service run by Metro between the stadium and the LAX/Metro Transit Center, where riders can connect to the C Line and K Line. Shuttles run every five to eight minutes, starting three hours before kickoff and continuing until 90 minutes after the event ends. Several local bus routes also serve the area. The planned Inglewood Transit Connector people mover was canceled in 2024.
Tickets and tours
Tickets for NFL games and concerts are sold per event, and demand for major occasions runs high. The surrounding Hollywood Park district offers restaurants, shops, and a cinema even on non-game days, so a visit can easily fill a whole day.
