O stadionu

Stadion Slazski (Silesian Stadium) is a multi-purpose sports venue in Chorzow, Silesian Voivodeship, Poland. With a capacity of 55,211 seats, it is the largest stadium in Poland and one of the biggest in Central Europe. Following a sweeping reconstruction completed in 2017, it serves as the principal home ground of the Poland men's national football team.

Location and surroundings

The stadium stands entirely within Park Slazski (Silesian Park), a vast green space straddling the boundary between Chorzow and Katowice. This park is one of the largest urban parks in Poland and encompasses a zoo, an amusement park, cable cars and a botanical garden. The stadium therefore occupies a uniquely natural setting -- surrounded by trees and walking paths rather than urban concrete.

Main uses

The stadium is primarily used as the national football team's home for key qualification and friendly matches. It also hosts major athletics events -- in 2023 it staged the European Athletics Team Championships. Beyond sport, the arena regularly accommodates large-scale concerts and national public events.

Historie

Cesta časem

The story of Stadion Slazski spans nearly seventy years of Polish sport, from communist-era grandeur to a 21st-century global standard rebuild.

Construction and opening

The stadium was designed in the monumental style of socialist architecture and officially opened in 1956. At its peak it held over 100,000 spectators, placing it among the largest venues in the world at the time. It was conceived as a flagship arena for the Silesian industrial region, symbolising the strength of the working class. Its park setting -- unusual at the time -- was a deliberate planning decision.

Major renovations

After 1989 the stadium gradually fell into disrepair as ageing concrete terraces no longer met UEFA or FIFA safety standards. A long-awaited comprehensive reconstruction began in 2009. Work continued, with interruptions, for more than eight years. The rebuilt stadium was formally reopened on 1 June 2017. Capacity was reduced to 55,211 all-seat places, but safety, comfort and infrastructure rose to world-class level.

Notable moments

The stadium witnessed Poland's golden era of football in the 1970s, when stars such as Wlodzimierz Lubanski and Kazimierz Deyna drew enormous crowds. After reconstruction it hosted a decisive 2018 World Cup qualifier and multiple UEFA Nations League and European Championship qualification ties. The 2023 European Athletics Team Championships brought a new audience and showcased the modernised facility to an international stage.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

Stadion Slazski generates a distinctive atmosphere shaped by its park surroundings and the deeply rooted fan culture of Silesia. Supporters from this region are regarded as among the most passionate in all of Poland.

Fan culture

Polish football has a strong supporter tradition, and Stadion Slazski is one of its focal points. Home crowds drawn from Chorzow, Katowice, Bytom and the wider Silesian conurbation bring intense vocal support. The stadium carries the nickname Kotiol Czarownic -- the Witches' Cauldron -- a name that aptly describes the cauldron-like noise generated during high-stakes fixtures. Silesian regional identity runs deep and proud, and that pride is felt throughout the stands.

Big matches

Among the most memorable occasions are Poland's clashes with England and Germany in World Cup and European Championship qualification. The 1970s brought legendary nights when the Polish national team, at the height of its powers, played before capacity crowds. In the modern era the stadium has hosted tense qualifying duels against France, Germany and other European heavyweights, with tens of thousands of supporters creating an atmosphere that lives up to the Witches' Cauldron reputation.

Praktické info

Návštěva stadionu

Visiting Stadion Slazski is straightforward, though its location inside a large park means transport planning is worthwhile.

How to get there

  • Tram: Direct tram lines from Chorzow and Katowice run to the edge of Park Slazski -- alight at the Park Slazski stop, from where the stadium is a short walk.
  • Bus: Regional bus routes connect the venue with other Silesian cities including Bytom and Gliwice.
  • Car: Car parks in adjacent sections of the park fill early on matchdays. Using a park-and-ride with a tram connection is strongly recommended.
  • Train: The nearest railway station is Chorzow Batory, from which a tram or a roughly 20-minute walk will take you to the ground.

Tickets and tours

Match tickets for Poland national team fixtures are sold through the official PZPN website (Polish Football Association). Demand for significant qualification matches is high and sell-outs are common; purchasing early is advised. Public stadium tours are limited in availability -- check the stadium's official website or contact the venue management for the current schedule.

Visitor tips

  • When to arrive? Allow at least 60-90 minutes before kick-off -- entry checks and the distance from city centres require a generous buffer.
  • Is it family-friendly? Yes, with designated family sections and full disabled access throughout.
  • Where to eat? Several cafes and bistros operate within Park Slazski, though the choice is more limited than at city-centre stadiums; eating in nearby Chorzow or Katowice before travelling is a good option.
  • What else to see? Park Slazski itself is worth a longer visit -- the zoo, the Wesolo Miasteczko amusement park and the park's walking trails are all recommended, especially for families.
