Location and surroundings
The stadium lies in Harare, the capital and largest city of Zimbabwe. It is one of the country's most important football grounds and is firmly rooted in local sporting and historical memory. As the home of two Harare clubs, it is a focal point of football in the city, drawing supporters regularly to top-flight domestic fixtures.
Main uses
Rufaro Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium currently used mostly for football. It is home to Dynamos F.C., one of the most popular clubs in Zimbabwe, as well as Harare City F.C. Its 60,000 capacity makes it one of the largest arenas in the country. Beyond league matches, the stadium has a rich history of hosting major cultural and state occasions.
History
Journey through time
The history of Rufaro Stadium is woven into the most important moments of modern Zimbabwe. The ground in Harare, with a capacity of 60,000, became famous not only for football but above all as the setting for the celebration of Zimbabwe's independence in 1980.
Construction and opening
Rufaro Stadium was built as one of the principal football grounds of Harare and the home of Dynamos F.C. and Harare City F.C. As a multi-purpose arena it was designed from the start for large crowds and became a key venue for football life in the capital of Zimbabwe.
Major renovations
Through its GOAL programme, FIFA sponsored the conversion of the natural grass pitch into an artificial surface called Xtreme Turf, manufactured and installed by Act Global. The synthetic turf was removed at the end of the 2016 season due to its deteriorating state and replaced with natural turf, with the stadium reopening in April 2017. Extensive renovations were completed in February 2024, when Premier Soccer League chairman Farai Jere described the stadium as "world-class," with the aim of bringing international matches back. As of June 2025, however, the ground was reported to be in poor condition, notably due to poor drainage.
Notable moments
The most famous moment at Rufaro Stadium came in 1980, when Bob Marley and the Wailers performed at the celebration of Zimbabwe's independence and the end of white-minority rule. The stadium later hosted a televised concert by Paul Simon at the height of his Graceland tour, where he was joined by Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Atmosphere
Matchday
The atmosphere at Rufaro Stadium comes from its status as a traditional football ground of Harare and the home of Dynamos F.C. and Harare City F.C. When its 60,000-seat stands fill up, the arena turns into a loud backdrop for the most important matches in Zimbabwe's top flight.
Fan culture
Dynamos F.C. is one of the most popular clubs in Zimbabwe, and its supporters bring a fervent atmosphere of singing and colour to matches at Rufaro Stadium. The ground in Harare is also home to Harare City F.C., so city derbies and meetings between the Harare clubs rank among the highlights of the football season.
Big matches
Beyond league clashes between Dynamos F.C. and Harare City F.C., Rufaro Stadium has sought the return of international football — after the extensive renovation completed in February 2024 it was described as "world-class," with the ambition of hosting internationals again. The arena also wrote itself into history as the setting for concerts by Bob Marley and Paul Simon, making it far more than just a football venue.
