Přehled
O stadionu
Råsunda Stadium was the Swedish national football stadium, located in the city of Solna on the northern edge of Stockholm. Opened in 1937 and designed by architect Birger Borgström, it served for seven decades as the home ground of AIK Stockholm and the Swedish national team. At its peak capacity of 36,800 seats, it held a four-star UEFA rating. The stadium was demolished in 2013 and replaced by the modern Friends Arena (now Strawberry Arena), situated approximately one kilometre away.
Location and setting
The stadium took its name from the Råsunda district of Solna, and stood as the physical and symbolic centre of Swedish football throughout the 20th century. Sweden's national team played the vast majority of their home fixtures there, giving the ground an exceptional national significance that extended well beyond the club level.
Main uses
Råsunda functioned as the home of AIK Stockholm in league competition and as the primary stage for Sweden's national team from 1937 to 2012. It was also one of the main venues for the 1958 FIFA World Cup hosted by Sweden, and most notably served as the site of the 1958 World Cup Final -- one of the most celebrated matches in football history.
Historie
Cesta časem
Råsunda Stadium opened in 1937 as a purpose-built home for AIK Stockholm and the Swedish national football team. Designed by Birger Borgström, it was built to a standard that reflected the growing popularity of the sport across Scandinavia and immediately became the centrepiece of Swedish football.
The 1958 World Cup Final
The stadium's most defining moment came on 29 June 1958, when it hosted the FIFA World Cup Final between Brazil and Sweden. Brazil won 5:2, claiming their first ever World Cup title. The match is remembered above all as the moment a seventeen-year-old Pele announced himself to the world: he scored two goals, having entered the tournament as an unknown teenager, and put in a performance of such brilliance that it instantly established him as one of the greatest players the game had ever seen. Brazil had trailed 1:2 before turning the match completely; Pele's contribution that day remains one of football's founding legends. The entire 1958 tournament was staged in Sweden, and Råsunda, as host of the final, earned permanent international renown.
Seven decades of Swedish football
Across the period 1937 -- 2012, the stadium hosted hundreds of Sweden national team matches and served as the long-standing home of AIK in the Allsvenskan. Capacity varied over the years between 35,000 and 36,800 seats, reflecting periodic renovation work. UEFA awarded the ground a four-star classification, placing it among the leading European venues of its era.
Closure and demolition
Sweden's final home match at Råsunda was played in November 2012. The stadium was subsequently closed and demolished in 2013. The adjacent site was developed into the modern Friends Arena (renamed Strawberry Arena in 2024), which has a capacity of over 50,000 and now serves as Sweden's national stadium. The original Råsunda site was redeveloped as a residential neighbourhood.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
The atmosphere at Råsunda Stadium was inseparable from Swedish football's national identity. A compact, enclosed bowl, the ground generated intense noise on matchdays and provided an intimidating backdrop for visiting nations going up against the Swedish national team.
AIK and local football culture
AIK Stockholm is one of Sweden's oldest and most successful clubs, and Råsunda was their home for decades. AIK supporters are known for passionate, loyal backing, and the Allsvenskan seasons played at the ground were characterised by an atmosphere of genuine local pride. When the national team took over the stadium, the same stands that had echoed with AIK chants filled instead with the collective voice of Swedish football as a whole.
The legacy of 1958
The 1958 World Cup Final transformed Råsunda into a place of global football significance. Although Sweden lost the match, the experience of hosting the final created a powerful memory for Swedish supporters -- their team had reached the pinnacle, and their stadium had witnessed the birth of a footballing legend in Pele. Generations of Swedish fans grew up knowing that one of the most important moments in the history of the sport had taken place at Råsunda.
Farewell in 2012
The final matches played at Råsunda in 2012 carried a deeply emotional charge. Supporters and players alike were aware they were bidding farewell to a venue that had been the heart of Swedish football for 75 years. The demolition in 2013 was experienced by many as the loss of a physical memory -- a place where history had been made and could no longer be visited.
