Přehled
O stadionu
Stadion Plovdiv is a multi-purpose stadium in Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second-largest city, situated in the fertile Thracian Plain along the banks of the Maritsa River. With a capacity of 55,000 seats (as of 2008), it is one of the largest stadiums in Bulgaria and serves primarily as an athletics venue, while also functioning as the historic home ground of Botev Plovdiv football club.
Location and surroundings
The stadium stands within a sports complex in the south-eastern part of Plovdiv, close to the Maritsa River. Plovdiv itself is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, with a remarkably preserved Roman amphitheatre, ancient Thracian and Byzantine layers, and the picturesque Kapana district -- all of which make it a major tourist destination. The historic city centre lies approximately 3--4 km from the stadium. Plovdiv Airport is 13 km from the city centre.
Main uses
The stadium functions primarily as an athletics arena, hosting Bulgarian and international championships. Its football role is closely associated with Botev Plovdiv, one of Bulgaria's oldest and most popular clubs. The ground has also staged Bulgaria national football team fixtures and a variety of major sporting and cultural events.
Historie
Cesta časem
Stadion Plovdiv was constructed in 1950 as part of the large-scale socialist sports infrastructure development in Bulgaria following the Second World War. From the outset it was designed as the central sporting facility for the entire Plovdiv region.
Construction and opening
Built in the early 1950s and opened in 1950, the stadium followed the Soviet model of mass-spectator venues with a running track and generously dimensioned stands. Plovdiv was then Bulgaria's second largest industrial and cultural centre, and the stadium immediately became the hub of sporting and social life in the city.
Renovations and capacity
Over the decades the stadium underwent several upgrade cycles. A key modernisation phase was completed by 2008, when the current capacity of 55,000 seats was established. The stands are covered, and facilities were progressively updated to meet requirements for both athletics and football events. The track meets IAAF international standards.
Notable moments
The stadium has hosted a range of key Bulgaria national team matches and athletics championships. Botev Plovdiv -- one of the founding members of the Bulgarian top flight -- experienced its golden era here, winning the Bulgarian championship and achieving memorable cup runs during the 1970s and 1980s. The venue has also hosted international athletics events as part of Balkan and Central European championships.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
Plovdiv's football identity is inseparable from Botev Plovdiv -- a club named after the Bulgarian national hero and poet Hristo Botev and carrying deep working-class roots. The club's yellow and black colours are omnipresent across the city, and the rivalry with local rivals Lokomotiv Plovdiv is among the most intense derbies in Bulgarian football.
Fan culture
Botev's support is rooted in the city's industrial identity. The ultras scene, led by the Grapata (Bulgarian for 'The Grape') group, is one of the most electrifying in the Bulgarian football pyramid -- tifo displays, drumming and mass chanting give home matches a distinctly passionate character. The Plovdiv derby between Botev and Lokomotiv is one of the most watched local rivalries in the country, and the stadium fills to capacity for these occasions.
Big matches
The stadium's most celebrated moments came during Botev Plovdiv's championship and cup-winning campaigns. It has also hosted Bulgaria national team fixtures before packed stands of tens of thousands of supporters, creating an atmosphere that older fans still recall vividly. International athletics events have drawn enthusiasts from across the Balkans and Central Europe, adding variety to the venue's event calendar.
