Přehled
O stadionu
Nelson Mandela Stadium Baraki is Algeria's new national stadium, situated in the Baraki district on the south-western outskirts of Algiers. With a capacity of 40,000 seats, it is the largest and most modern sporting arena in Algeria and a landmark in the new generation of African stadium infrastructure. The ground is named after Nelson Mandela, the legendary South African leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, honouring his pan-African legacy.
Location and surroundings
The stadium is located in the Baraki district, approximately 20 km south-west of central Algiers. Baraki is an industrial and residential suburb of the capital, well connected to the ring road motorway network. The complex was designed as a fully modern sporting campus, with parking areas, public transport access points and facilities for VIP guests and media. Its proximity to the motorway enables comfortable access from the city centre as well as from other Algerian cities.
Main uses
The stadium serves as the principal home venue of the Algeria national football team (Les Fennecs) for major fixtures, including qualifying campaigns and tournament matches in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). It is one of the central venues for CHAN 2025 (African Nations Championship, reserved for players competing in domestic leagues) hosted by Algeria, and is expected to serve future AFCON editions held on Algerian soil.
Historie
Cesta časem
The construction of a new national stadium in Algiers addressed a long-standing need. The existing 5 July 1962 Stadium in the city centre dates from the colonial era and, despite its symbolic importance, its capacity and technical condition no longer matched Algeria's football ambitions. The decision to build a modern national arena in Baraki was taken as part of a broader government strategy to develop world-class sports infrastructure.
Construction and opening
The project was entrusted to a construction consortium with experience in delivering modern stadiums across the African continent. Work progressed during the early 2020s and the stadium was inaugurated in 2024. The opening ceremony was attended by state officials and was widely seen as a defining moment for Algerian sport. The choice of Nelson Mandela's name reflects Algeria's long tradition of pan-African solidarity and its deep historical ties with the anti-apartheid movement.
Key milestones
Immediately after opening, the stadium replaced the 5 July 1962 Stadium as the primary venue for Algeria national team home matches. Algerian football is in an ambitious phase -- the national team won AFCON 2019 and has remained among Africa's elite, competing regularly in the latter stages of continental tournaments. The Baraki stadium provides infrastructure commensurate with this ambition and positions Algeria to bid for and host major CAF events in the coming years.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
The atmosphere at Nelson Mandela Stadium reflects the deep passion of Algerian football, which is woven into the nation's collective identity. Algeria's football culture has roots in the independence struggle -- the national team (Les Fennecs) was a symbol of national self-determination during the liberation war of the 1950s and 1960s. This historical weight gives every international fixture a particular emotional intensity that goes beyond sport.
Fan culture
Algerian supporters are among the loudest and most numerous on the African continent. The national team commands a loyal following across the entire country and among the large Algerian diaspora in Europe -- most significantly in France. Home matches of Les Fennecs are social events of national importance, drawing thousands of supporters to the stadium and its surroundings. Chanting, green-and-white flags and percussive drumming create a wall of sound typical of North African football culture. The new stadium in Baraki provides the modern, well-equipped setting needed to channel this energy effectively.
Big matches
Among the first key fixtures at the new ground are AFCON qualifying matches and international friendlies for the Algeria national team. The stadium was designed to fully comply with CAF standards for hosting major African tournaments. The CHAN 2025 group-stage and knockout matches, with Algeria as host nation, will represent the first major stress-test of the venue's capacity, logistics and atmosphere on the continental stage.

- When to arrive? Allow at least 60 minutes before kick-off -- the area around the stadium fills quickly and, as a newly opened venue, security screening capacity is still being optimised with experience.
- What to wear? Algiers has a Mediterranean climate -- summer matches can be very hot, while autumn and winter evening fixtures may be cool. Dress according to the season and time of kick-off.
- Where to stay? Central Algiers and the districts of Hydra, Ben Aknoun and Bab Ezzouar offer hotels across a range of price points; the distance to Baraki is manageable by taxi.
- Important note: As a foreign visitor, verify Algerian entry and visa requirements before travelling. Carry valid identification at all times -- security checks at the stadium entrance are thorough.
