MOL Arena

Football has been played on this site in Dunajská Streda since 1953. Today's MOL Aréna, however, is the product of a rebuild that turned a small-town Slovak ground into an arena meeting the demands of European football.

Construction and opening

The original stadium dates from 1953 and served DAC Dunajská Streda for decades in the form typical of Slovak district towns — a mix of seating and terracing, with a capacity counted rather differently than today.

Major renovations

The decisive change was conversion to an all-seated ground. The present capacity of 12,700 is entirely seated, a condition both for the top division and for hosting fixtures under UEFA's banner.

Modernisation also brought floodlighting matched to the demands of television coverage and evening kick-offs.

The rebuild changed the nature of attendance too: the older ground held more people, but largely standing. The smaller all-seated capacity of today reflects current rules.

Notable moments

MOL Aréna is a sponsorship name — the ground is also known as the DAC Aréna, the designation used in English-language coverage. As with other Central European stadiums, the sponsor's name may change while the bond with the club remains.

The MOL Aréna occupies an unusual position among Slovak grounds. At 12,700 seats it is a large arena for a district town, and precisely that mismatch between the size of the stadium and the size of Dunajská Streda gives the place its character.

Fan culture

The home end belongs to the supporters of FC DAC 1904 Dunajská Streda. The club has a reputation in Slovakia for an exceptionally loyal following — a share of the town's population attends that larger clubs in bigger cities cannot match.

The ground being fully roofed and all-seated matters to the atmosphere. Sound holds inside the closed bowl, and a full house is audible from outside.

The club also operates the stadium itself, so the shape of a matchday — from ticketing to facilities — is under its own control.

Big matches

The biggest draws are fixtures against ŠK Slovan Bratislava, Slovakia's most successful club; a district-town arena against the Bratislava giant carries real charge by Slovak standards.

The second category is European competition, for which the all-seated capacity and matching floodlighting qualify the ground.

The MOL Aréna lies in Dunajská Streda, a district town on the Žitný ostrov roughly midway between Bratislava and Komárno. Unlike big-city grounds, most visitors arrive by car or by train from the surrounding region.

How to get there

By car, Dunajská Streda is easily reached from Bratislava along the main road towards Komárno. Because this is a smaller town, matchday traffic is far less congested than around stadiums inside large cities.

By train, the town sits on the line from Bratislava, so arriving without a car is straightforward. The ground itself is within walking distance of the town centre, Dunajská Streda being compact.

Tickets and tours

Tickets are sold by FC DAC 1904 Dunajská Streda, which also operates the stadium — information on access and facilities therefore comes directly from the club.

Fixtures against ŠK Slovan Bratislava and European ties sell out considerably earlier than an ordinary league round. Given how high attendance runs relative to the size of the town, buying ahead is worthwhile.
