Overview
About the stadium
MetLife Stadium is a vast multi-purpose venue in East Rutherford, New Jersey, located just about 5 miles (8 km) west of New York City within the Meadowlands Sports Complex. With a seating capacity of approximately 82,500, it ranks among the largest NFL venues in the United States and is famous for one rare distinction: it is the home of two NFL teams.
Two NFL home teams
The stadium is shared by both the New York Giants and the New York Jets — the only NFL venue permanently used by two rival franchises. Its lighting and signage panels change colour depending on which club is the host, so the building reinvents itself from week to week throughout the season.
Location and facilities
MetLife Stadium replaced the legendary Giants Stadium and opened a thoroughly modern complex with sweeping tiers, premium suites and top-class amenities. Open to the sky in the cold northeastern climate, it delivers an authentic taste of American outdoor football at its rawest.
History
Journey through time
MetLife Stadium opened on April 10, 2010 at a cost of roughly $1.6 billion, making it one of the most expensive sports venues of its era. It replaced the neighbouring Giants Stadium, which had served since the 1970s.
Super Bowl XLVIII
Just four years after opening, the stadium hosted Super Bowl XLVIII (February 2, 2014) — the first time the NFL championship was played at an open-air venue in a cold-weather city. The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos 43–8.
Soccer milestones and the 2026 World Cup final
Beyond American football, it staged the 2016 Copa América Centenario final, where Chile beat Argentina on penalties. The crowning moment in the stadium's history will be the 2026 FIFA World Cup final — for the tournament it will carry the temporary name "New York/New Jersey Stadium." The venue will thus enter history as the stage for the most-watched single match in world sport.
Atmosphere
Matchday
The atmosphere at MetLife Stadium shifts from game to game because two fan bases share it. On NFL Sundays the complex turns into a sea of blue (Giants) or green (Jets), and the surrounding lots come alive with classic tailgating — grilling and pre-game parties in the parking areas.
A dual fan identity
Supporters of both the Giants and the Jets treat the building as their own, so the mood and décor change with whoever is playing. Rivalry games and marquee matchups draw the full 82,500 crowd and create a deafening backdrop.
Major events and concerts
The stadium is also one of America's premier concert stages, having hosted Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran and The Rolling Stones. It has staged WrestleMania and numerous international soccer fixtures, making it one of the busiest entertainment arenas on the U.S. East Coast.
