Přehled
O stadionu
Metalist Stadium is a football ground in Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine, with origins dating to 1926. Comprehensively rebuilt for UEFA Euro 2012, it holds 38,633 spectators and served as the home of FC Metalist Kharkiv — historically one of Ukraine's most successful clubs in European competition.
Location and surroundings
The stadium sits in the central part of Kharkiv adjacent to Metalist Park, approximately 3 km northwest of Freedom Square (Maidan Svobody) — one of the largest public squares in Europe. The surrounding district blends Soviet-era architecture with extensive parkland. The stadium's infrastructure was substantially upgraded ahead of Euro 2012, and Kharkiv's metro system provides direct access to the wider city. Kharkiv is Ukraine's second-largest city.
Main uses
The stadium was the primary home of FC Metalist Kharkiv in the Ukrainian Premier League and in UEFA club competitions. During UEFA Euro 2012 it hosted four group-stage matches. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Kharkiv — located approximately 30 km from the Russian border — has been under sustained threat; sporting activity at the stadium is severely restricted and its current accessibility should be verified before any visit.
Historie
Cesta časem
Metalist Stadium is among the oldest football grounds on the territory of modern Ukraine, its origins rooted in the era when Kharkiv served as the capital of Soviet Ukraine.
Construction and opening
The stadium was first established in 1926, built to serve the growing industrial workforce and sporting community of Kharkiv. The original structure reflected Soviet architectural norms of the period. Over the following decades the ground underwent a series of incremental modifications, but its most significant transformation came in the twenty-first century.
Major renovations
The most extensive reconstruction took place between 2009 and 2011, driven by Ukraine's co-hosting of UEFA Euro 2012 alongside Poland. The project delivered a fully covered steel roof over all four stands, new seating to UEFA Category 4 standard, and a final capacity of 38,633. Modern hospitality, broadcast and media facilities were installed throughout. The renovation transformed a dated industrial-era ground into an internationally certified venue.
Notable moments
During UEFA Euro 2012, Metalist hosted four group-stage fixtures. The most widely watched was the Group D clash England vs. France (1:1) on 11 June 2012, a match followed by hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide. Sweden vs. France (2:0) on 19 June 2012 was another notable fixture. For FK Metalist Kharkiv the years around the tournament coincided with the club's European peak — regular participation in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds and the UEFA Europa League.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
Kharkiv has a passionate and long-established football culture; FC Metalist Kharkiv built its supporter base over decades in Ukraine's most industrially significant city outside Kyiv.
Fan culture
FC Metalist Kharkiv — nicknamed the Yellow-Blues — has deep roots in Kharkiv's industrial history. The club's ultras groups occupied the south stand and produced choreographies and tifo displays that were among the most respected in Ukrainian football. Kharkiv's large student population — the city hosts several major universities — added a younger, energetic dimension to matchday crowds. Yellow and blue are ubiquitous across the city.
Big matches
European nights at Metalist against opponents including Sporting CP, FC Shakhtar Donetsk and clubs in the UEFA Europa League group stage attracted capacity crowds and generated an atmosphere that confirmed the stadium's place among Ukraine's most vibrant venues. The arrival of UEFA Euro 2012 brought an international audience to Kharkiv for the first time at this scale. The England vs. France match on 11 June 2012 was the tournament's most high-profile fixture at this venue, drawing wall-to-wall international media coverage and filling the stadium with supporters from across the continent.
