Overview

About the stadium

Lumen Field is a multi-purpose stadium in Seattle's SoDo neighborhood, serving as one of the most distinctive sporting venues in the United States. It is the rare arena that hosts two top-flight teams at the highest level of both American football and association football, and is renowned worldwide for the deafening roar of its crowd.

Two teams, two sports

The stadium is the home of the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL, who have played here since it opened in 2002, with a football capacity of 68,740 (expandable to 72,000). It is also the home of Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer, who have drawn among the highest attendances in MLS since joining in 2009. For soccer the lower bowl seats 37,722, but the venue regularly opens its upper tiers to accommodate enormous crowds.

The 12th Man

Lumen Field is famous for its "12th Man" — the nickname for its passionate supporters. On December 2, 2013, fans set a Guinness World Record for the loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium, reaching 137.6 decibels during a Seahawks game against the New Orleans Saints.

History

Journey through time

Lumen Field opened on July 28, 2002, built on the site of the demolished Kingdome at a cost of around $430 million. Designed by Ellerbe Becket and LMN Architects, it was conceived as an open-air, football-and-soccer venue from the outset.

A stadium of many names

The ground opened as Seahawks Stadium, was renamed Qwest Field in 2004, became CenturyLink Field in 2011, and took its current name Lumen Field in November 2020 after CenturyLink rebranded to Lumen Technologies.

Records and milestones

The stadium's reputation for noise became official on December 2, 2013, when the crowd set the Guinness World Record of 137.6 dB. Seattle Sounders set a venue attendance record of 69,274 at the 2019 MLS Cup Final, won 3–1 over Toronto FC.

A 2026 World Cup venue

Lumen Field has been selected as a host venue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where it will stage six matches including group-stage and knockout games. During the tournament it will be known as "Seattle Stadium" under FIFA's sponsorship rules.

Atmosphere

Matchday

Few stadiums in world sport can match the sheer volume generated inside Lumen Field. The combination of devoted fans and clever engineering has made it a genuine home-field advantage.

The loudest crowd on Earth

The "12th Man" is more than a slogan: the partial roof covers around 70% of seats and reflects sound straight back down onto the field, trapping and amplifying the noise. This design helped the crowd reach the Guinness World Record 137.6 decibels in 2013 — loud enough to register on regional earthquake sensors during especially raucous moments.

Sounders fill the bowl

While NFL Sundays are thunderous, the Seattle Sounders have built one of the great atmospheres in North American soccer. Their supporters' marches, tifo displays and constant singing routinely draw crowds among the largest in MLS, with the lower bowl opened up to the full 68,740 for marquee fixtures. The record 69,274 at the 2019 MLS Cup Final remains a benchmark for the league.

Practical info

Visiting the stadium

Lumen Field sits at 800 Occidental Avenue South in Seattle's SoDo district, just south of downtown and easily reached without a car. Match days bring large crowds, so public transport is strongly recommended.

How to get there

  • Link light rail: Take Sound Transit's 1 Line or 2 Line to Stadium Station, a short walk from the gates, or to International District/Chinatown Station.
  • Sounder commuter rail & Amtrak: Both serve nearby King Street Station, ideal for fans coming from the suburbs or out of town.
  • By car: Around 3,100 garage spaces plus thousands of surrounding lot spaces are available, but expect heavy traffic on game days.
  • Tickets: Buy in advance through the official Seahawks, Sounders or stadium websites; demand for both teams is high and sell-outs are common.
