Overview

About the stadium

Estádio Luiz José de Lacerda, universally known as the Lacerdão, is the largest football stadium in the interior of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. It stands in the city of Caruaru, roughly 130 km inland from the coastal capital Recife, and is the long-standing home of Central Sport Club, which also owns it. For supporters across the Agreste region it is the great footballing shrine and a symbol of local pride.

Key facts

  • Capacity: approximately 19,478 spectators
  • Opened: 19 October 1980
  • Main club: Central Sport Club
  • City: Caruaru, Pernambuco state
  • Nickname: Lacerdão

The stadium is named after Luiz José de Lacerda, a long-serving president of Central. Its monumental scale earned it the augmentative nickname "Lacerdão" and made Caruaru an important stop on the football map of northeastern Brazil. Beyond club fixtures, Central has hosted historic matches here against traditional giants from Recife and the south of the country.

History

Journey through time

The stadium was inaugurated on 19 October 1980 and originally bore the name Estádio Pedro Victor de Albuquerque before being renamed in honour of Luiz José de Lacerda, who led Central across several terms between 1962 and 1993. At the time it was one of the largest and most modern arenas anywhere in the interior of Pernambuco.

Famous moments

The opening match delivered an exotic sensation: Central beat the Nigeria national team 3–1, and the first goal at the new ground was scored by a player nicknamed Gil Mineiro. The attendance record fell on 22 October 1986, when 24,450 spectators watched Central defeat the famous Flamengo 2–1.

  • 1980: inauguration and an opening win over Nigeria
  • 1986: record crowd of 24,450 against Flamengo
  • Host to the Campeonato Pernambucano and to fixtures in national competitions

The Lacerdão thus became the backdrop for unforgettable nights, when a smaller club from the interior could challenge Brazil's footballing giants.

Atmosphere

Matchday

When Central play at home, the Lacerdão turns into a loud hub of passion for the entire Agreste region. Fans from Caruaru and the surrounding towns fill the stands with drums, flags and chants, creating the kind of atmosphere typical of northeastern Brazil, where football and folk culture blend into one.

Caruaru and São João

Caruaru is famous for more than football. It is one of the capitals of the São João festival, the traditional June celebration of forró music, bonfires and dancing that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors. That festive energy carries over to the stadium too.

  • Derbies and regional rivalries stir the terraces most
  • Drum sections and flags give matches their colourful character
  • Local dishes such as carne de sol and tapioca are sold around the ground

Thanks to its size, the Lacerdão has a reputation as the great "obra" of the interior — a place where even a second-division club can feel like a powerhouse, and where the football memories of generations of Caruaru fans are made.

Practical info

Visiting the stadium

The Lacerdão sits in Caruaru, the main hub of the Agreste region in the interior of Pernambuco. Getting there is part of the experience — the sertão landscape, the artisan markets and the festival atmosphere make a visit more than just a football trip.

How to get there

  • From Recife: about 130 km along the BR-232 highway, roughly 2 hours by car or intercity bus
  • By air: the nearest major airport is Recife/Guararapes (REC); Caruaru also has a smaller regional airport
  • In the city: reach the stadium by local buses or taxis/ride-hailing apps

Tips for visitors

  • Combine the match with a visit to the famous Feira de Caruaru market and the Alto do Moura pottery district

  • Expect the hot interior climate — bring water and a hat

A visit to the Lacerdão therefore offers a combination of lively regional football and the authentic culture of northeastern Brazil.
