Přehled
O stadionu
Karaiskakis Stadium is a multi-purpose football stadium in Piraeus, the port city that forms part of the greater Athens metropolitan area. With a capacity of 33,296 seats, it is one of the most prominent football venues in Greece and serves as the home ground of Olympiacos Piraeus, the country's most decorated club. The stadium is named after Georgios Karaiskakis, a celebrated commander of the Greek War of Independence who was fatally wounded in this area in 1827. The venue is operated by Olympiacos F.C.
Location and surroundings
The stadium sits at the heart of Piraeus (Πειραιάς), Greece's largest port and a constituent part of the Athens urban agglomeration, approximately 10 km southwest of central Athens. It lies close to the waterfront, the Faliro district, and the main coastal road linking Athens with its southern suburbs. The surrounding neighbourhood is a dense mix of residential and light-industrial areas typical of a working port city.
Main uses
Karaiskakis Stadium serves primarily as the home arena of Olympiacos Piraeus for Greek Super League fixtures and European competition. It occasionally hosts major concerts and cultural events. In 2024, it became the venue for the UEFA Conference League final, cementing its place on the map of significant European football grounds.
Historie
Cesta časem
The history of the site stretches back to the late nineteenth century. In 1895 a velodrome was established here, which gradually evolved into a football ground. Organised sport in Piraeus was therefore closely tied to this location from its earliest days.
Naming and historical context
The stadium takes its name from Georgios Karaiskakis (1780-1827), a military commander of the Greek War of Independence and a national hero. Karaiskakis was fatally wounded in battle near Piraeus in March 1827, just days before a planned assault on the Ottoman siege of Athens. His courage and tactical skill made him an enduring symbol of Greek resistance, and naming public institutions after him is a long-established tradition. Piraeus itself, as Greece's principal port and a centre of working-class culture throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, developed a particularly deep football identity.
Modern rebuild
The stadium's defining transformation came in 2003, when it was extensively rebuilt as a modern football arena. The new structure features a compact, enclosed design with evenly distributed stands wrapped tightly around the pitch. Capacity settled at approximately 33,000 seats, and the technical facilities met the UEFA standards required for international competition. The rebuild significantly improved the matchday experience for supporters and players alike and positioned the ground for European fixtures.
2024 Conference League final
The most significant event in the stadium's modern era was the 2024 UEFA Conference League final, in which Olympique de Marseille faced Atalanta Bergamo. Atalanta won 3-0, claiming their first-ever European trophy. For the stadium and the city of Piraeus, the occasion represented the highest-profile concentration of European football attention the ground had ever hosted.
Atmosféra
Den zápasu
The atmosphere at Karaiskakis Stadium ranks among the most intense in all of Greek football. Supporters of Olympiacos Piraeus are renowned for their unwavering loyalty, vocal passion, and a fan culture that stretches back generations.
Fan culture
Olympiakos is by a wide margin the most successful club in Greek football, with 47 Super League titles, and is deeply embedded in the identity of Piraeus as a port and working-class city. Supporter groups, including factions named after Gate 7 — a reference to the gate near which fans died in a crowd tragedy in 1981 — maintain a strong community with their own symbolism, chants, and traditions. The club's red-and-white colours fill the stadium at every home fixture. The intensity is amplified further for derby matches against Panathinaikos and AEK Athens, fixtures widely regarded as among the fiercest rivalries in Greek sport.
Big matches
The most significant European occasion in the stadium's history was the 2024 Conference League final, which drew fans from Marseille and Bergamo to Piraeus as a neutral venue. The stadium demonstrated its capacity to manage the logistics and atmosphere of a major European final. In a domestic context, the ground's most celebrated European nights came during Olympiacos's 1998-99 UEFA Champions League campaign, when the club reached the quarter-finals and created electric matchday atmospheres that remain a benchmark for Greek club football.
Praktické info
Návštěva stadionu
Karaiskakis Stadium is located in Piraeus, which is straightforwardly accessible from central Athens by metro or suburban rail.
How to get there
- Metro: Line M1 (Green Line), stations Faliro or Neo Faliro — both are within walking distance of the stadium (approximately 10-15 minutes on foot). Journey time from central Athens (Monastiraki) is roughly 30-35 minutes.
- Suburban rail (Proastiakos): Trains run to Pireás station, from where local buses or a walk connect to the ground.
- Bus: Several OASA lines serve Piraeus from different parts of Athens; express route X96 connects the airport to Piraeus.
- Car: The stadium is accessible from the A1/E75 motorway; parking in the immediate vicinity is limited, especially on matchdays.
Tickets and tours
Tickets for Olympiacos matches are sold via the official club website (olympiacos.org) and at the ground's ticket offices. High-demand fixtures — derbies and European ties — sell out quickly, so advance purchase is strongly recommended. Stadium tours are not permanently scheduled; check the club website for current availability.
Visitor tips
- When to arrive: Allow at least 60-75 minutes before kick-off — ticket and security checks can be thorough on busy matchdays.
- Explore Piraeus: The port area offers excellent tavernas and seafood restaurants worth visiting before a match. Piraeus is an authentic working city rather than a tourist destination, which adds to the local character.
- Island connections: Piraeus is the main ferry hub for the Greek islands (Hydra, Spetses, Aegina) — a match visit pairs naturally with a wider weekend trip to the Saronic Gulf islands.
