Přehled

O stadionu

Heinz von Heiden Arena is a football stadium in the Calenberger Neustadt district of Hanover, Lower Saxony, Germany. It holds 49,000 spectators, including a standing terrace in the North End (Nordkurve) accommodating approximately 12,000 passionate supporters. The stadium is the home ground of Hannover 96, currently competing in 2. Bundesliga. Over its lifetime it has carried several names and undergone major modernisation.

Location and surroundings

The stadium sits roughly 3 km south-west of Hanover city centre, close to the Leine river and the Maschpark -- one of the largest urban parks in Germany. The area blends green parkland with excellent public transport links. The neighbouring Maschsee lake, with its promenade, terraces, and restaurants, makes the surrounding district a popular gathering place for supporters before and after matches.

Main uses

The arena serves primarily as the home of Hannover 96 for league and cup fixtures. In the past it hosted six matches at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, after which it returned to exclusive club use. The complex includes modern VIP facilities, a fan shop, and extensive catering areas. Outside the football season the venue occasionally hosts large-scale concerts and other events.

Historie

Cesta časem

The stadium in Hanover has a history stretching back to the mid-20th century and has been the central venue for Hanover football and several international events. Its present form and name are the result of decades of change.

Construction and opening

The original stadium was inaugurated in 1954 as Niedersachsenstadion, designed as a representative multi-use arena for Lower Saxony with an initial capacity exceeding 86,000. The architectural practice Schulitz + Partner oversaw the modern redevelopment. Following extensive reconstruction in the 1990s and further upgrades ahead of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the venue became a compact modern football stadium with a capacity of 49,000.

Major renovations

In the late 1990s the original open terraces were replaced by a fully enclosed, roofed bowl. The reconstruction delivered new VIP suites, an upgraded media centre, and modernised stand sections throughout. The North End standing terrace with more than 12,000 places was retained as a centrepiece of Hannover's matchday culture. After the 2006 World Cup, further improvements were made to supporter facilities and internal infrastructure. The name changed from Niedersachsenstadion to AWD-Arena (2002), then HDI-Arena (2013), and finally Heinz von Heiden Arena (2021).

Notable moments

The stadium hosted six FIFA World Cup 2006 matches, including a group-stage thriller and the third-place play-off between Germany and Portugal. In club history the seasons 2001/02 and 2002/03 stand out as Hannover 96's finest modern era, when the club competed in the UEFA Champions League and packed the arena for memorable European nights. Hannover's first Bundesliga title in 1938 is the foundation of a proud heritage that supporters celebrate to this day.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

The atmosphere inside Heinz von Heiden Arena reflects a passionate fan culture rooted in Lower Saxon regional identity and a proud club history. The North End standing terrace is the engine room of matchday noise.

Fan culture

Hannover 96 draws tens of thousands of supporters from Hanover and the wider Lower Saxony region. The Nordkurve standing terrace, holding over 12,000 fans, is the home of the club's most vocal ultras groups -- coordinated chants, banners, and tifo displays that sustain an intense wall of sound throughout the match. The club's green-and-black colours fill the stadium bowl on big occasions. Fan culture here carries real depth, rooted in a tradition going back to the 1930s when Hannover 96 were German champions, and kept alive through the highs of Champions League football in the 2000s and the lows of relegation battles.

Big matches

The 2006 FIFA World Cup brought a global audience to Hanover, with six group-stage and knockout fixtures putting the city on the international football map. In the Champions League era, European nights against clubs such as Fenerbahce SK and Arsenal FC rank among the most electrifying the arena has witnessed. Relegation deciders and promotion play-offs in recent years have also generated some of the fiercest atmospheres, proving that the stadium's capacity for intensity does not depend on the division.
