Přehled

O stadionu

Fisht Olympic Stadium is a landmark arena in Sochi, Russia, built as the centrepiece of the Olympic Park for the 2014 Winter Olympics. The stadium holds up to 45,000 spectators and its sweeping roof, inspired by the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus, became one of the defining images of the Games. It was designed by Populous and later converted to host six matches at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Location and surroundings

The stadium stands in the Adler Olympic Park on the coast of the Black Sea, in the Adler district of southern Sochi, Krasnodar Krai. It is flanked by other Olympic venues — the Bolshoy Ice Dome, the Shaiba Arena and the Iceberg Skating Palace. The Caucasus mountain range forms a dramatic backdrop on clear days, while the Black Sea lies just a short walk away. The dedicated Olimpiysky Park railway station sits within a few hundred metres of the stadium entrances.

Main uses

The stadium was built primarily to host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. After the Games it was converted into a football venue and in 2018 hosted group-stage and knockout matches at the FIFA World Cup, welcoming teams including Argentina, Iceland, Nigeria and Croatia. Today it functions as a multi-purpose arena for major sporting and cultural events.

Historie

Cesta časem

The history of Fisht is a story of Olympic ambition, rapid post-Games conversion and a unique dual role at the two biggest sporting events on the planet.

Construction and opening

The stadium was designed by Populous and built between 2012 and 2013 as part of the wider Sochi Olympic infrastructure project. It officially opened on 7 February 2014 when it hosted the spectacular Winter Olympics opening ceremony, broadcast to an estimated 3 billion television viewers. The roof design, evoking the snowfields of the western Caucasus, drew international architectural praise and remains the building's defining visual identity.

Major renovations

Following the 2014 Games the stadium was closed and underwent a comprehensive conversion between 2015 and 2017 to meet FIFA standards for the World Cup. Changes included the installation of a natural grass pitch, reconfiguration of seating and upgrades to broadcast and hospitality infrastructure. Post-conversion capacity for football reached 47,659 seats. The name Fisht — shared with a mountain peak in the western Caucasus — was retained from the original Olympic branding.

Notable moments

The opening ceremony of 7 February 2014 remains the stadium's most watched moment, reaching a global audience of over 3 billion. At World Cup 2018, the venue hosted the historic debut of Iceland at a FIFA World Cup — a 1-1 draw with Argentina on 16 June 2018. The group-stage clash between Nigeria and Argentina (26 June 2018), in which Lionel Messi scored a stunning solo goal, was another defining image of that tournament.

Atmosféra

Den zápasu

Fisht creates a unique atmosphere shaped by its extraordinary setting between the Caucasus mountains and the Black Sea, and by the global crowds that the biggest events draw to Sochi.

Fan culture

The stadium has no permanent home club, so its atmosphere is always defined by the occasion. At the 2018 World Cup the Olympic Park transformed into an international fan zone, with supporters from Argentina, Nigeria, Iceland, Croatia and beyond filling the concourses in a vivid mix of colours and languages. Russian football fans added local warmth, and the outdoor Olympic Park setting — with palm trees and mountain peaks in the same skyline — gave every matchday an almost surreal quality.

Big matches

Iceland vs. Argentina (1-1) on 16 June 2018 was the most emotionally charged match the stadium has hosted: a small footballing nation appearing at a World Cup for the first time, holding one of the tournament favourites. Nigeria vs. Argentina on 26 June 2018 produced one of the tournament's most celebrated goals, with Messi finding the net after a mazy individual run. The 2014 Olympic opening ceremony under floodlights, with the Caucasus illuminated behind the stadium, belongs to a different category entirely — a spectacle that made Fisht famous worldwide overnight.

Praktické info

Návštěva stadionu

Visiting Fisht Stadium requires some advance planning, particularly around access to the Olympic Park, which operates as a controlled zone with its own entry procedures.
